COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When the railroad was completed between Madison and Milwaukee in 1882, mucky soils in the glacial swamp near Lake Mills made the tracks most unsteady. A bridge-tender stood guard, 24 hours-a-day, to warn oncoming trains of the danger ahead and caution them to slow their pace. One engineer chose not to heed this warning and the locomotive lost control and tumbled off the bridge into the mud below. The train is said to be forever entombed deep in the muck along the present day Glacial Drumlin trail. We brew Down ‘n Dirty Chocolate Oatmeal Stout thick and black like the glacial muck.

Pours an inky, oily looking black with a minimal, although long lasting tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, cocoa, chocolate, and just hints of licorice. The taste is plenty of malts, more earthy actually. There is still a healthy amount of chocolate, especially in the aftertaste. The chocolate aftertaste is rather subtle, but it does linger in your mouth. I still find very subtle impressions of licorice. This is a bit sweet as well. The body is medium, while it has a smooth, creamy texture. Carbonation is limited. Very easy drinking here, although I get the feeling it might be a bit stronger than I realize.

Pour was deep dark with a slightly dark tan head. Aroma was strong with chocolate, light caramel, and some bread characters. Body was medium to full with a smooth oat character along with some more well blended chocolate malt and a nice caramel finish.

12 oz bottle pours a black with a sudsy brown head. Smells like roasted malt, burnt oats, a hint of coffee and cocoa. Tastes good. Not as full bodied as some of the other Imperial stouts, but it’s nice and creamy, mildly carbonated, and has a nice long finish. An outstanding brew at this price point. Another really good beer from Tyranena.

Pitch black with big tan head. Nose heavy with acidic roast malt, coffee, and dark chocolate. Smooth, oatmeal-silky body with more acidic roast malt/coffee with a faint sweet aspect. Lingering bitter chocolate and roast. The acidic roasted malt quality is just slightly more than I’d like. Nice stuff.

[Tap] Draught at Farmhouse in Evanston. Pours an opaque black color with a lasting brown head. Aroma is of roasted malts, chocolate, espresso and vanilla bean. Oatmeal comes out a bit more in the flavor. Milk chocolate, mocha, earthy notes and lingering bittersweet finish. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Pleasantly surprised by this one.
