Bottled 21Jun2010 A: pours a brown ale with cherry hues and brilliant clarity. Single finger of off-white head falls to a decent sheet of the same. Spotty lacing. S: Raisins, raisins, malts, bourbon and raisins. Sweet and stony fruits. Slightly peppery and herbal nose touches and sweet with molasses as well. anise. Nutty. I like this nose. T: Dry and nutty. Bourbon is present and obvious - and I imagine that the bourbon was ferocious a year ago. Herbal, tea flavors, vanilla, brown sugar, oaky, decent. M: Medium to thin for the style with medium carbonation. Slightly slicking on the palate. O: Decent, but brown ales don’t really benefit from a barrel really. Still has a slight hint of alcohol. Plenty of fruits on this - indicating to me that the beer wouldn’t age particularly well. This is a good attempt, but theres something missing. At 6% abv, the beer doesn’t really hold up. Bottled September 20, 2013.
Appearance: The body has perfect clarity and a garnet-chestnut hued body, it’s a beautiful color. The head is short and dense, but the retention is poor. The head settles into a thin white coating with a creamy ring.
Aroma: The aroma has decent strength, pushing up cocoa, vanilla, toffee and caramel with a very mild bourbon presence. Some oak is noted as well. This reminds me a bit of root beer.
Taste: The intro is mild but prominent of vanilla. The mid-taste adds cocoa, caramel and toffee, the flavor is mild and balanced nicely with prominent vanilla overtones. The finish has a sort of vanilla Coke finish with a very light bourbon. The finish lingers a moment with oak and vanilla.
Palate: Full-bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: This is a pretty nice beer, but I feel that the vanilla dominates. The beer is balanced nicely with good flavors throughout, though nothing really sticks out. I enjoy drinking this, though I think it’s an odd choice for a bourbon barrel.

Bottled 6/13/13. Poured 9/29/13. Deep brown with a dense, fluffy just off-white head. Aroma is bourbon, wood, brown sugar, molasses, cocoa, coffee, hint of soy. Taste is really quite nice; molasses, dark fruit (dark berries), bourbon, wood, vanilla, earthy, herbal; finish is dry, bourbon, some cocoa. Nice lacing. Mouth feel is medium-full; deceptive. Medium carbonation; higher than expected. Overall, quite nice. Tasty; not TOO far from being sessionable. Not quite as exciting as some of their other beers, still a nice offering from Tyranena.

hondajunkie (87) - Tinley Park, Illinois, USA - SEP 16, 2013
Bottle poured into a English pint glass a fizzy dark copper with a light khaki head that peetered out quickly leaving s very small ring in edge of glass. Faint aromas of malt, barley, vanilla, nutmeg. Light to medium carbonation tasting of chocolate, hint of vanilla, bourbon. A nicely balanced brown ale with just enough burn from the bourbon aging to give it a nice finish. Would have liked a little more body to it but overall a nice brew.
