We brewed our 2009 version of our Scotch Ale and will be tapping on ObamaNight (Jan 20, 08) as InaugurAle. We have slightly altered the recipe from last year, marginally increasing the amount of peated malt and using the traditional ingredient of roasted barley (just a wee bit)... we removed a dark caramel malt and replaced with a special malt that should also contribute well to the overall character. As always, we use plenty of Scotlandís finest Golden Promise as well as our Wisconsin base malt.

Bottle. Clear, deep amber body. Fizzy, off-white head rapidly diminishing. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel, toffee and a hint of raw grain. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and lightly bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Lots of malt flavor. The sweet caramel is balanced by peaty, toasted grain in the flavor. Some hints of herbal hops.

On tap - Pours deep brown with a thin tan head. Nose is huge waves of malt, light smokiness, and some sweet toffee notes. Taste is the same, with a nice bready maltiness, peaty smokiness, and a touch of heat. Really bold. Pretty thick and well carbonated.

Pours an amber with a thinner light beige head. Aroma contains caramel, roasted malts, and brown sugar. It isnít bad, but it is very faint. The taste picks up from here. Much more caramel appears, along with nuts, molasses, a bit of apple, and some slight smokiness. Medium bodied with a actually a more thick texture, along with some softer carbonation. Aftertaste is nuttier more than anything. Outside of the subtle aroma, everything seems to be done pretty well here. I just think that this one isnít for me.

Great aromas of bread and caramel sweetness. Taste is similar as the scent, sweetness is hidden well with a bit of spice, great mouth feel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured into a tulip. Wonderful dark amber with very little head. Dissipates quickly to a ring around the glass. Nice malty smell. I get a little biscuit too. Taste is mostly malt with a little caramel and a clean finish. Well carbonated. Very easy to drink. It would be no problem to sit and work through a few of these.

12 ounce bottle pours an amber color, aromas of caramel, sweet malt, light peat, some light fruit and some floral esthers. Flavors follow suit, blended nicely. Solid beer would drink again.

Bottle from Liz. Pours dark amber with a slight beige head. Aromas of heavily roasted malt and some floral hop. Full bodied. Flavor is roasted malt, lightly smoky, almost peaty, with floral hop. Itís almost sweet, not too bitter. Somehow it all comes together in an amazing taste treat. Very, very, tasty.

Bottle from Breeze Thru. Pours a very unclear orangey brown with fine under-surface bubbles and a fine small ring of a head around the edges. I mean almost no head - it is amazing the many small bubbles under the surface do not get to the surface. Also amazing is that there is some nice lacing as you get down in the glass. Aroma has subtly sweet caramel, dark fruit and earthy straw. Taste is of sweet earthy fruits, heavy malts and some alcohol. Quite thick. Finishes somewhat short and somewhat sweet. Not a big fan. Also not sure if I had an older bottle?

Brownish orange with a thin tan head, looks thick and syrupy. Smells like sweet caramel, molasses and slight alcohol (less so than somd other scotch ales though). Taste is mostly sweet. Heavy bodied. I liked this as compared to other scotch ales, but scotch ales are not one of my favorite styles.
