We brewed our 2009 version of our Scotch Ale and will be tapping on ObamaNight (Jan 20, 08) as InaugurAle. We have slightly altered the recipe from last year, marginally increasing the amount of peated malt and using the traditional ingredient of roasted barley (just a wee bit)... we removed a dark caramel malt and replaced with a special malt that should also contribute well to the overall character. As always, we use plenty of Scotlandís finest Golden Promise as well as our Wisconsin base malt.

Pours an amber with a thinner light beige head. Aroma contains caramel, roasted malts, and brown sugar. It isnít bad, but it is very faint. The taste picks up from here. Much more caramel appears, along with nuts, molasses, a bit of apple, and some slight smokiness. Medium bodied with a actually a more thick texture, along with some softer carbonation. Aftertaste is nuttier more than anything. Outside of the subtle aroma, everything seems to be done pretty well here. I just think that this one isnít for me.

Draft at the weary traveler in madison. Caramel and slightly smokey malts dominate.

About as malty as you can get, if you are tired of IPAs this will swing you back toward the malty side big time. Very earthy, and only slightly sweet, and quite smooth. I think it was the least expensive Scotch Ale at the store I went too but it could very well be the best.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Nonic glass. Brew smells funky, carmely, and sweet. The aromas definitely inform you this is going to be a malty beast. Beerís warm, dark copper color is inviting, but it didnít render much of a head at all when I poured it into my glass. Only a thin layer of fine, off-white bubbles floated up to the surface, but they did remain there throughout the entire drink. Beer has a blast of flavor right on the attack of the sip. Some spiciness hits you on the tip of the tongue, then the rich malty flavors fill your mouth. The finish is where that unusual funkiness set in. Itís a boozy finish as well, which has a nice chest-warming effect. Body of the brew is very, very rich. The fine carbonation provides the beer with itís delightful smoothness. I very much enjoyed this brew. Iím not yet well-versed in Scotch ales, but the funky characteristics (I donít mean this in a negative manner) in this brew caught me by surprise, which sets this Scotch ale apart from all the other ones Iíve tasted previously. This is a yummy beer. "Never turn your back on your beer."

On tap, poured into a sampler glass. The aroma is roasted malt with some toffee sugariness, and some raisin / fig notes. It pours a lightly hazy caramel color, dark, with a thin, white ring that disappears by mid glass leaving an oily looking surface with no lace. The flavor is a medium / medium-high sweet with a medium bitter. Itís smooth with a light fizz and a medium malty body. Notes of raisin, fig, toffee, and chocolate are most present, and it finishes sweet and smooth with notes of nuts and caramel and just a light roasted coffee bitterness. The aftertaste is reminiscent of bakerís chocolate with nuts and caramel as well as an interesting mineral water late that cleans everything up leaving just a light roasty aftertaste.

Rated on 4-18-2011 at JK OíDonnellís Irish Ale House in Fort Wayne, IN. This draft beer pours a small smooth ivory head with a lengthy retention, transparent copper body, very little carbonation observed, and a generous amount of lacing. The aroma is toffee, roasted malt and dark fruits. The taste is roasted malt, semi-sweet and dark fruits. The mouthfeel is lightly tingly and this beer is medium bodied. This beer has an enjoyable flavor as it is not abusive in any way. It is worth trying and a beer I would definitely drink again.
