(bottle) A gush of malt aroma as the top is opened. Dark amber with white head. Flavor is malt and hops, more on the sweet side.

Dark amber color with tiny little partials floating around. Smell of malt, minor citrus, caramel, root beer, yeast and hops. Tastes of hops, roasted malt, caramel, candy, yeast, ginger and a rubber bitterness at the end. A fine beer .

UPDATED: OCT 25, 2007 This is a beautiful beer, it’s a nice deep burnt amber color, with a medium white head and a nice brown haziness to it. The smell is of yeast, spice, and roast malt. The taste is VERY roasted, caramel, spice, with remote sherry notes. Quite distinct. Anyways, the mouthfeel is silky, smooth and creamy. It is wonderful brew, similar to a doppelbock, but also unlike anything i’ve tasted. I usually come up with one phrase to really describe a beer, and for this one it would be: Roast malt to the extreme!

From a embossed, long narrow neck, swing top 11.2 oz. bottle with a bottled on and freshness date on the neck label, sampled a cool cellar temperature in a stange glass. Poured a lightly hazy, reddish copper with a frothy, foamy white head that slowly settled into a thin sudsy lacing, small amount of ringed sticking. Aromas of fruity esters, apples and oranges, roasted grains, a subtle toasted nutty, and medicinal herbal at the edges. Good, steady medium carbonation and a dry, crisp, slightly bitter slick, velvety smooth medium-light bodied mouthfeel. A pleasant roasted malty and bitter taste, sweet, roasted earthy grainy malts, a touch nutty, a light fruitiness, apples, pears, with a subtle citric, leafy, medicinal herbal hoppiness that have a soft, lingering bitterness, and a dry, bitter, earthy grainy finish, the hops wash around the palate in the aftertaste. An excellent Altbier from one of my favorite German breweries, a tasty and balanced German-style ale.

Draught at the brewpub. Deeply red and darkly bitter orange-grapefruit-grainy-fruity. Could almost be Old speckled Hen. By far the bitterest of the Alts I’ve tried. But that quinine-bitter note detracts from the balanced complexity of flavours that makes some of the other Alts so appealing. Whisper it under your breath, but the Weizen’s actually a far tastier and more interesting brew.

Draught at the brewpub. Slightly fruity aroma, some spicy hoppiness. Very dark copper colour, almost brown. Unstable head. The flavour also has spicy hops, some sweet malt character and medium bitterness. Easily drinkable. Not complex, but well-balanced.

Small pop-top brown bottle. Somewhat murky amber-orange body with a good inch of head that leaves good lacing. Smells nutty with some other malt. Tastes malty with kind of a peppery/smokey quality to it... Caramel malt is also a big player in the flavor. Rather light in body. Not sure how fresh this one is. Not quite like everyone else is talking about... Nonetheless, not bad, but not great, and I probably won’t be triny this one again unless I find it on tap somewhere.

Pours a nice brown/copper color, fairly clear, with a minimal off-white head of foam. Marginal lacing. Mildly malty and carbonic in the aroma. The taste is nice, with a caramel malt presence that is a bit drier than I am used to, followed by nice spicy noble hops. Almost medium body and quite effervescent. Dry and clean in the aftertaste.
