500ml bottle. Clear, deep, copper pour, big, puffy, beige head. Dark, caramel biscuit, toasted cereal aroma with some grassy hops, and some floral fruit. The finish is quite bitter, and also quite fruity. Loads of great malts, toasted cereals, some nuttiness. Man, this is an Alt! Awesome stuff. Now i understand the description of german equivalent to an english ale.

Backlog. On tap at The Green Lion Inn. My first Alt and still probably my favourite. A truly under-estimated beer-style.

Tap @ The Brauhaus in Dusseldorf. Dark orange brown, big foamy head. Biscuit lemon toffee malt aroma. Complex dry spicy lemon biscuit malt flavour. Bitter sweet aftertaste. Least favourite Altbier in Dusseldorf so far but most complex.

Bottle at home 11th March 2014. From RB Eurotrade. Deep ruby colour with a reddish foaming head which dies back to some thin retention. Sweet malts, ruby fruits balanced with a satisfying bitterness. 2 month old bottle but still pretty tasty stuff. Look forward to trying it fresh some time.

Bottle thanks to McTapps to toast a successful trade. Sent and consumed super fresh. Dark amber with off white head. Nice aroma, raisins, toffee, dried fruit, slight citrus edge, slightly doughy. Took me a while to put my finger on the flavour but it’s bubblegum, tutti frutti with toffee. Full body with a bitter finish. Tasty beer, could drink a lot of these.

Uerige Alt is the very definition of German Altbier. Dark ruby color, dense white foam with good retention, malty, complex ale aroma. Clean, intense bitterness with a roasty malt backbone. Other German Altbiers pale (literally) in comparison to Uerige. It is a wonder to me how they manage to export any of their product given their extremely limited production capacity and their popularity in and around Düsseldorf. This is a first cousin to the English IPA´s, but it is has a dry, clean finish, not fruity or musty like the English beers. Microbrewers take note: this is the target to shoot for. no over the top floral hops, no explosion of fruity esters, no scratchy astringency. I challenge all of you to produce anything even remotely resembling Uerige Alt!
