Aroma of spicy hops. Clear, amber coloured with a thin, white head. Decent, smooth taste of roasted malts and good hops. Smooth palate.

Hazy and a dull red with lots of floaters and a creamy off white head. Tart and caramelly aroma with some banana and plum. Big in body but dry in finish. Bitter and sour with some toffee, malt and vanilla. I think my bottle may be past its due date.

Herbal yoghurt aroma. Light brown color, greyish head, good lace. Light sweet, bitter, herbal and a almost creamy feeling. Great Alt!

Elegant aroma, subtle hops with the caramel. It’s served too cold, the mouthfeel is a bit too dry and the bitterness too high, at the end.

Beautiful dark amber color; creamy head. Malty aroma, with some malt; later (the temperature...) it develops a very nice (but quite light) hop note. Maltier example than others in Düsseldorf, with loads of caramel, very strong bitterness, partially aromatic. Very strong taste, powerful brew. Less hoppy than the Zum Schlüssel.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Brown/Amber with a tan head. Loads of fizzle on the pour building the head to one finger in size, which diminished rapidly. Aromas of various malts, roasted and sweet, hay, hops and alcohol. Flavors starts with a weakened sweet but smooth caramel, some teas, and hops which grow to a nice pinacle in the end. A lasting aftertaste extends an overall good mouthfell.

I was immediately impressed with the ample bavarian hops here, not something you find all too often in German altbier. The flavor is more typical of the region - lighty roasted barley with a sharpness in the finish - but the hops (lightly grassy, not too citrusy, kind of dank actually, light but not wimpy) keep the beer on edge and give it a kick that is highly appreciated especially here in the Pacific NW. Beyond this is a whole new range of flavors in the finish - some more mellow nuttiness and breadiness, some sharper bitters from the hops, and a very subtle glow from the alcohol. I like this, a Bavarian beer with some balls, nice.

In the bottle at the Crescent Moon Alehouse. And what an awesome bottle it is! This screams homebrewer all over it with the resealable grommet cap. Pours a murky brown with an ivory head. The head is big and stays big until the bottom of the glass. Aroma is strong with an earthy hay-like smell. Flavor is dry. There must be such a huge boiling hop content in this beer. It simply dessicates your mouth and tongue. Each sip makes you thirstier and thirstier. I liked the bottle better than the beer.

UPDATED: MAY 8, 2011 Rerate from tap at Uerige. Pretty hazy chestnut, lacing cappuccino head. Roast and light smoked notes I did not find in the bottle. Harmonic bitter roasted finish. Fullflavored yet refreshing.
Original rating 7 5 7 3 14 Bottle.
Chestnut colouring, small visible bubbles, big brown creamy head.
Light juniper and fruity aroma like in the Sticke.
Bitter herbal flavors on a relatively light roasted body. Quite unusual and quite interresting.

Bottle Pours a medium dark amber that has a little haze to it. Nice white creamy head and thick spotty lacing. Aroma is slightly sweet and dark. Pears, raisons apples. Flavor is woody, dry and with some of the same flavors. Quite bitter and a fine and lively carbonation. Aftertaste is bore bitterness.

As it is named after a freaky former owner of the brewery, it is the most polarising Alt in Düsseldorf. Wonderfull roughly taste, spicy, hoppy and malty at the same time. Many people like it, some hate it. I just love it.
