RichJ7 (830), Cullman, Alabama, USA May 11, 2008 Cloudy, near opaque brown pour with a thin off-white head. Malty, bready nose with a hop undercurrent. Flavor is rich and very much like a barley wine: alcohol and malt with a fruity sweetness that is slightly overshadowed by the hoppiness. It’s an interesting balance with caramel and roasted malts competing with an earthy hallertau hop thing. Very nice. BlackDonald (428), Anchorage, Alaska, USA May 8, 2008 Pours a murky dark brown with auburn highlights, ahs a doughy and somewhat fruity nose, and you can immediately make out the style. This is one of those beers that essentially has to be drank at the proper temperature to truly appreciate all it has to offer. The alcohol is very present but in a warming way, and not a hot on the top of the mouth kinf of way, slightly heavy mouthfeel, with lots of sweet dark fruits and bit of a caramelized nuttiness, blended with bittersweet raisins. Very nice. Dacrza (111), Great Meadows, New Jersey, USA May 2, 2008 Dark velvet borwn body; pillowy half-inch head that settles to a solid brown--intimidating! Tremendous balance of malt, hop and fruity yeasts--pleasantly alluring.... warm, smooth and full-bodied--more like a porter or imperial stout in the mouthfeel... little alcohol to note... coffee and stout-like smokiness that rushes to the throat... malt is most prevalent and balanced with creamy esthers... in reading the "commercial description" I can see my expectations were pleasantly surprised... a bit challenging by mid-glass, but overall a warming brew--and at $75 a case, probably not an economic choice when seeking out doppelbocks (which I falsely thought this was)-- weighing that in, still an enjoyable beer to sit with, stare at, savor... MaltDawg (78), Richmond, Virginia, USA May 1, 2008 Cask firkin at Capital Ale House. Almost an opaque dark brown. Malt dominated aroma with some sour overtones. Dark roast malt, raisin and sweet caramel flavors. Cramy full mouthfeel with little carbonation. Hop bitterness last well into finish. Numenor (808), Richmond, Virginia, USA Apr 29, 2008 Cask at Cap. Ale - Midlothian for their opening. A great beer, nice dark pour with a great aroma of heavy malts, caramel and dark fruit accents. Very smooth taste, again with the dark fruit accents. Ending was very nice and smooth.
