Commercial Description:
Uerige DoppelSticke might just be "Germany's interpretation of a barley-wine", ie a third definition next to England's "malt-driven" idea {such as JW Lees Vintage Harvest Ale} and America's "hop-heavy" version {such as Sierra Nevada's BigFoot}. OG - 1085; IBU - 75; Ingredients; Hops:Spalt Spalter, Hallertauer Perle, Spalt Hallertauer; Malts: Pilsner malt, caramel malt, roasted malt

Bottle. Pours like a stout. Black with brown head, long lasting and thick, with a good amount of lacing. Aroma of pepper and raisins. Very hoppy taste when compared to the maltiness of the aroma. Still, a background of raisin and toffee. Interesting twist on one of my favorite styles.

11.2 oz swing cap bottle. Poured a reddish/brown with a very slight off white head that just barely coated the entire body of the beer.Malty aroma of raisins, sugar, wood, pineapple, honey, and bread. Medium to full bodied with lots of lively carbonation and a very dry palate. Flavor has an overall soapy flavor that distracts from the other flavors. Notes of wood, peat, brown sugar, malts and tons of alcohol for only being 8.5%. Pleasant but I was hoping for more.

In short: Weird perfumy floral malty beer of some kind. Intriguing.
How: Bottle, almost one year old.
The look: Cloudy copper-brown body with a short-lived beige head.
In long: Aroma is unusually floral for an Albier, almost perfume. Very yeasty beer with a bubblegum aroma and flavour (purple “grapes” bubblegum to be more precise). Rather sweet with . Liquorice, caramel and lost of spicy hard-candies. A little peppermint and a little medicinal flavour (cough syrup?). Really full body, sticky and resinous. Strong but weird bitterness. The hops came out as garden flowers (lilacs mainly) and a little piney. I believe this was my first bottle of this well-known beer. Certainly not what I expect from an Alt. Was it because of the almost one-year of age but something just wasn’t right here. The potential was there but it was all over the place. A weird beer through and through. Looks great as a candlestick though and the only reason I’d buy another bottle is to get a matching pair.

Bottled 06-04. Pours a hazy, muddy, deep garnet with a moderately-full, beige, creamy head; longevity is fair and lacing is plentiful. Nose is great and rich; burnt brown sugar notes, toffee, caramellized dates, light wood notes, and some spicy, floral hops. Flavor is much of the same with a moderate bitterness; burnt wood, burnt caramel, vanilla, molasses, date, and lightly floral/spicy hops. Palate is nice with a moderately full body, a lively carbonation, and a silky smooth feel. Finishes long and bittersweet with molasses, almost some chocolate, date, lingering spicy hop notes, with a bit of floral still there. Takes the great attributes of a strong Alt and of a doppel and creates a great, unique beer. Awesome, rich malt tones with a balancing hop presence. I can’t believe I waited so long to try this one, turned out to be one the best german beers I’ve tried.

Pours a dark rawhide brown with half a thumbnail of tan head. The pour itself is subtle and coagulate like a dense barley wine. Creamy caramel aromas waft straight out of the bottle. Tastes are robust with roasted caramel, wood, big big malts, dark fruits, mild tobacco, and peanut brittle. Lingering alcohol toward the finish. Soft carbonation and full bodied. Flavors are strong up front, but peter out in the finish. I haven’t had too many Altbiers yet, but this had all the qualities of a good barley wine over anything else.

This was not an altbier if I have anything to do with it. Damn good, but not an altbier. Aroma was decent...dark fruit(?), burnt malt and must. Pour was as beautiful as a beer could get. Deep murky brown with not much movement and a 2 finger tan head. Looked like a river at night time. Taste was very strong and pronounced. Heavy on the malt, very thick mouthfeel (almost like a milkshake) and very alcoholic. Burns the throat at swallow. Some hoppiness in the aftertaste. The commercial description is dead on...does taste like a barleywine. Just older and dirtier.

11.2 oz brown swing top bottle poured into a shaker pint. Hazy dark copper, appeared to be bottle conditioned. Two fingers of fine white bubbled head. Lots of malt in the aroma, some noble hops, and a little alcohol. Deep malty flavor, plenty of sweetness. Caramel/molasses. Nice dose of hop bitterness to balance it out. Medium to full bodied. A really unique beer, very drinkable.

Hugely disappointing. I can’t believe the beer in this bottle was what was supposed to be in there. Smelled and tasted like a dopplebock that was overhopped and had gotten old. Taste was sweet carmely malt with lots of old rubbery hops. Color was a murky red brown. Their regular altbier is fantastic, this was ugly
