COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Uerige DoppelSticke might just be "Germany's interpretation of a barley-wine", ie a third definition next to England's "malt-driven" idea {such as JW Lees Vintage Harvest Ale} and America's "hop-heavy" version {such as Sierra Nevada's BigFoot}. OG - 1085; IBU - 75; Ingredients; Hops:Spalt Spalter, Hallertauer Perle, Spalt Hallertauer; Malts: Pilsner malt, caramel malt, roasted malt

Older bottle but can’t quite make out the date on the label. Nice deep red color, no head to speak of. Quite malty nose, a bit stale smelling. Taste reminds me of a barley wine past it’s prime; flat and sticky and alcoholic. Hops and malt do play well together but there is just too much history on this beer to do it justice.

A pretty potent beer, especially for a German. I can see why it rates on top of the category. Pours dark murky brown like mud without much head or lacing. Huge malt aroma with caramel, booze and a hint of raisin aroma. Roast is pretty potent here as well. Light sweet and bitter finish. Bottle.

cloudy cola-brown, mustard yellow at edges, thin, very fine, tan head, fades quickly to dusty, thin film. Aroma is chewy caramel, toffee, grass, beech-wood forest in the cold of winter (that is, it has pleasant woody/nutty notes in there.) Hints of earthiness. Flavor is boom! very barley-wine-esque: sweet syrupy spicy bitterness, pine and earthy hops. A bit cloying, but the hops keep it in check. A slight bit hot on the exhale, but this is also kept in check. Bitterness only has a slight lingering sensation. Nuttiness comes out as it warms. Body is medium-heavy, syrupy, with light carbonation, no burn, very soft and fine. The nutty wood in the aroma and the bitter-yet-restrained-slightly-hot finish are highlights for me. I am surprised this is German. It does indeed taste like an east-coast barley wine. Just a bit too sweet for me

UPDATED: OCT 18, 2014 Flasche (33 cl), „Bottled on: 12.11“, vom Biershop Braugasthöfe, knapp 2 Jahre im Keller gelagert.

Tall 0,33 l bottle. Hard to get here in Germany. Pours out nearly black in the glass. No real head. Choco, coffie, berriefruits and licorice on the nose. Starts strange to me. Oily, malt, coffie, berriefuits, dark wood, hopy, with an unknown heavy sweetness, alcoholic. Complex. Not an easy to drink beer.

Dare I say I’m not particularly impressed. All the flavors are there. But this is syrupy, and way too boozy.

Bottle from Bier-Deluxe.de. Dark brown color with small white head. Dark malt, rum in aroma. Dark malt, rum, licorice, honey, dark chocolate, raisins, alcoholic bitterness. Tasty.

11.2 ounce swing top bottle. It pours a very dark brown with reddish hues with a 1 finger head of tannish foam. Big caramel malt in the nose, very sweet smelling, kind of a maple syrup sweetness. Sweet, for sure in the taste, it also brings a close to bitter dark chocolate flavour that’s very nice; cuts the sweetness. I’m getting some raisin like flavour and hints of other dark fruits. I’d call this full bodied as it’s very thick and luxurious to my palate. Lightish carbonation. Wow, this is a grand brew, very enjoyable and satisfying.

Had a bottle in St. Louis. Dark brown cloudy lots of yeast. Aroma is malt, dark fruit, alcohol. Flavor is much more dark fruit, far less malt, more alcohol than the alt. Big mouthfeel. Big strong high alcohol beer.

"Almost get run soaked raisins in the aroma. So dense. Figgy molasses, bready brown sugar, full flavored and full bodied. The flavor shows a bit more alcohol than the sublime nose, but this is still likely the best and biggest alt I’ve ever had."
