Carnival comes but once a year - and you can only enjoy Sticke beer at Uerige twice a year. It contains more malt and hops and has a higher alcoholic content than normal Altbier. And our guests appreciate it! In earlier days it used to be whispered hand over mouth that Uerige was serving Sticke again because the master brewer had portioned the ingredients too generously. With today’s fully-automated operation, this could not happen. So Sticke beer is brewed intentionally - and this certainly doesn’t negatively effect either its quality or taste.

The two dates every year are always the same. The third Tuesday in January and October are the two Sticke days.

Bottle. Pours a deep amber-hued hazy brown body with a substantial creamy off-white head. Nose is raisins, grains, bread dough, caramel and hints of nuts and dark syrup. Taste is raisins, grains, cereals, bread dough, caramel and hints of figs, grass and dark syrup. Medium to full body, soft to medium carbonation. Very pleasant Altbier, malty and full of dark fruits but still balanced in sweetness somehow. Most enjoyable.

Bottle received in Euroswap 1, 2015. Pours very hazy deep hazel brown with a frothy beige head that leaves some sparse lacing and trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty, slightly floral, slightly earthy and tiny estery with dark bread, crispbread, caramel, cereal, hay, moist soil, pear skins and lemon peal. Taste is tiny sweet, bitter, malty, floral, earthy and tiny estery with dark bread, caramel, toasted cereal, hay, moist soil, minerals, lemon peal and hints of pear skins. Mouthfeel is soft, slightly viscous, round, tiny astringent, very tiny boozy and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet and bitter with dark bread, caramel, cereal, hay, moist soil, minerals, pear skins, lemon peal and hints of alcohol. Not like anything I’ve ever tried before but I like it. Even the slight pear eaters work in this brew. Very well made and tasty malt forward ale...

Pours a dark red turning brown with a small head. Aroma is nice and malty with a slight roastyness to it, with some slight spicy notes from the hops. Flavor is earthy, malty, slightly nutty and roasty with a nice herbal finish. When the beer warms up you get more dark fruits and even more nuttiness. It’s a really interesting brew. I’d definately try it again!

Hazy, medium brown body with a beige head that laces the glass well and that never gets thinner than a good layer. Fairly strong lager-like aroma of pale malts, caramel and generic fruits. Moderate flavour of caramel, pale malts and light fruity yeast. The moderate bitter finish is accompanied by citrus, herbs and resin. Light sweetness. Despite all the caramel the mouthfeel is crisp, thanks to the nice bitterness. Light body, dry texture, moderate carbonation. A nice beer, although I’m quite certain that altbier will never become my favourite beer style.
[33 cl bottle (and what a stylish bottle!), enjoyed 6 months before BB date, form Vinmonopolet Online]

Bottle at home. Pours a clear, deep mahogany colour with a ivory, compact head. Aroma of dried fruit, wood, leather, fudge, grassy hops and some spices and alcohol in the background. More of the same in the flavour where bitter hops are more present. Still there’s a solid, malty touch with lots of leather and caramel. Has a silky and slick mouth feel, and a solid bitterness. A malty beer with a present tones of alcohol and hops. A balanced and quite nice aroma, and not so balanced flavour imo.
