4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 ClarkVV (3578) - Allston, Massachusetts, USA - MAR 29, 2004
My bottle had the same numbers as the one at left (29.01 on top and 29.02 on the bottom). Good soft light brown color, with some light ambers and fuzzy peaches. Aroma of soft fuzzy hops, lightly sticky caramel malt and some damp musty basement notes. The flavor was soft, mild and lightly warming, but the mouthfeel blew me away. This is the epitome of soft, even delicateness, without being thin. Lightly sweet throughout, (light caramel, light brown fruits) and a hint of brown sugar perhaps. Hops are smooth and nowhere near as bitter as I would expect from this. Extremely drinkable, supremely balanced and I can't say I noticed any alcohol. Has a faint peachy warming sensation on the finish after it has warmed considerably. Exquisite.

Picked this up at State Line in Maryland. Served in a Mikasa tulip. Currently the #1 Altbier. Review #3000.
Pours a fairly-hazy dark tawny-mahogany with a thick off-white head that lasts for awhile and leaves quite a bit of lacing behind. The nose brings forward a good amount of bread crust and some earthy hops. Dry malt and a slight bit of roast. The flavor brings some light malty toasted character and some bread crust. Along with that, there’s some earthy hops and an accompanying dryness. Light caramel character in there as it warms more, though the earthy hops really begin to take over, especially with the bitterness in the finish. Medium body and lighter carbonation. Really nice example of the style.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 KyotoLefty (3480) - Kyoto, JAPAN - MAY 16, 2009
Dark amber or medium brown, with a low head. Aroma of sherry, well aged, a bit of fruit, especially dark fruit, and hops. Very sherry-like flavor, with cherries, caramel, and good hops. Tastes oaky and well aged. Much like a British old ale. Very well hopped, with a dry finish of hops and sherry. Nice, but not as good as the regular that I had fresh. The sherry-like aged flavor and aroma are a little too much. A very interesting strong alt. quite different indeed from the regular one. Rich and nice.

Clear amber color with a thick creamy white head. Aroma of malt with hints of honey. Sweet flavor with light hops.

Actually had this a couple of months ago, just misplaced the rating sheet. Faint aroma, pretty headless. Much lighter taste and pretty malty compared to the doppel. Haps come through only in the aftertaste. Cloudy amber color. A decent beer, but no match for the doppelsticke.
2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 nick76 (3461) - Tampa, Florida, USA - MAR 26, 2007
This one smells good. The aroma has toffee, caramel, and toasted malt, wild yeast, and hops. The appearance is red brown with a bubbly two finger head. The flavor however is not that good. It has the aroma elements but also cardboard and vinegar. The off flavors give it a stale sourness. Heck maybe it is a true "old ale" in the stale sense. The palate is sticky. Overall it’s a good smelling beer that has a problem with some sourness.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Jukkabro (3457) - Tampere, FINLAND - OCT 24, 2010
Dark red-brown colored with cloudy appearance, little yellow head. Chocolaty aroma with nice piny hop notes, dry one. Medium bodied. Flavor is even more hopped with piny-sticky tone, some toffee here too. Aftertaste is strongly bitter still.
3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 GT2 (3440) - Washington DC, USA - JUL 10, 2009
330 mL sweet flip-top bottle. Poured a deep, muddy brown with an enormous four-finger, tan, rocky head probably due to a little bottle refermentation. Little yeast particulates in the glass. Leaves some excellent lacing. Aroma is dried Saaz hops, herbal hops, caramel, black peppercorn, caramel, pumpernickel bread. Taste is earthy, caramel malt with some pepper and with a large presence of bittering hops leaving some pine resin notes. Finishes with some fruity esters. Would be the ultimate session beer were it cheaper.
