Very hoppy though light aroma much like an APA, though with touches of eastern european hops. Pours burnt orange with nice though fizzy head. Taste doesn’t match up with APA so much as a pilsner in that it has nice hopping but a balanced hop backbone that is medium thickness though still assertive.

Very cool bottle, to be considered in appearance. Reddish brown, malty appearance with a light fizz but not much head. Bready, German hops aroma, some caramel cookies, French Fries, and Coppertone suntan lotion. Long-lasting bitterness, though fairly well rounded. Moderate palate, smooth. Interesting; a style I don’t know well enough yet.

Nice malty essence. Spicy hops presence with dusty grain. Really nice altbier aroma, with a bit of smoke and broth. Simple and pure. Dark amber clear with creamy rocky off-white lacing head. Medium watery body with medium carbonation. Smooth drinking. Starts with nice maltiness, rich medium roast with caramelized sweetness. Bready and dusty with dry nutty-sweet finish. Nice hops bitterness with a bit of floral spicyness. After is dry and mildly nutty sweet. I could drink this every day.

11.2oz bottle. Pours a slightly hazy, tea-brown color; huge, light-khaki head with good retention and glistening, creamy lacing; a great pour. Solid presence of candy sugar and soft brown sugar in the aroma, with a crisp mineral bitterness; clean, fresh nose. Medium mouthfeel: crisp upfront mineral / earthy hop character and a solid maltiness: candy sugar, breadiness, and tea; strikes a good balance between malt-forward and solid, crisp drinkability; a very pleasant example of the style. Medium finish: dry breadiness, toasted malts, and candy sugar; a touch of lingering sweetness and zesty minerals.

Bottle shared by my brother. Clear, yet chunky amber/copper pour with a medium tan head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, grain and some noble hops. Flavor is toffee and caramel with a dry hop finish and a touch of fruit.

UPDATED: MAY 2, 2007 Pours a cloudy brown into a farmhouse water glass. No head whatsoever -- and no evidence of carbonation. Malt aromas - dates, plums, dough. Flat, sticky and figgy with a long lasting bitter malt finish.

(330 ml swing-top bottle: $3.69 at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) While not as impressive looking as the regular Uerige Alt, this one is far more tasty, so I’ll gladly take that trade-off. Malty, sweet, a bit earthy, only slightly bitter, and showing a pleasant nuttiness and a good bit of smokiness in the finish, this is reminding me of a really malty English ale. The aromatic nose is malty, earthy and a bit smoky. Medium in body and lightly carbonated, this goes down all too easy. Light brown in color, just a shade darker than the Uerige Alt, and slightly hazy in appearance. Very little actual head develops during or after the pour, just a sheen actually, but there are clumps of large bubbles that form during the pour. So, not much of a looker, but this is delicious. It’s a beer I just can’t help but continuously take small sips, just to keep constantly replentishing that tasty flavor on my tongue.
