4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 BBB63 (4939) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - MAR 6, 2004
Cask at Piece Brewery, enjoyed with Eric, Jeff, and Emily: A nice caramel hued brew with a small tan head but very good lacing. The aroma hints of aggressive bitter and noble hops, spicy white wine, toasted caramel malts, and leathery yeast esters. A sharp hoppy taste with a buttery malt undertone. The mouthfeel is so smooth, very nice. Glad we made the trip for this outstanding bier, among the finish in it's genre.

Beautiful long neck flip top bottle pours a brown tan color with a small head and no residual lace. The aroma is serious malt sweetness. The flavor is drier than the aroma, with some good caramel flavors mixing with the hops as a balance. The palate is rich and almost "sticky". Overall, I could drink a lot of this.

UPDATED: JUL 12, 2005 Deep amber-red color with a minimal off-white head, this has a nifty nutty sweet malt aroma with a healthy smattering of earthy hops thrown in. Solid roasted malt flavor, not real sweet, with a good hop counterbalance. Even better than their regular alt.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Schanulleke (8) - NETHERLANDS - OCT 30, 2005 does not count
Tasted 18th jan. 2005 at the brewery. A very good beer but measured bitterness was only 26 IBU’s. All the stories on the internet about higher hoprates and dry hopping are b******t. It has more alcohol than Uerige Alt, but less bitterness.

Not only is the beer inside the bottle very good, the bottle itself is unique and very eyecatching. Shaped like a German handgrenade, the beer won’t blow up the taste buds with anything unusual, but it you will be happy that you took the time to drink this. An aroma of sweet caramel malts, earthy hops, slightly nutty, and a bit oxidized. A ruddy brown, hazy color with a 1-finger thick head. Caramel malts, grassy with just a touch of spices makes this one a drinker. Reminded me of a subdued English barleywine in some ways. Very tasty beer. I enjoyed this one much more than their Dopple Sticke.

initially, I got an nose of cherry, but it further developed into a bit of a fig aroma, with some hints of "other fruit" tartness. Upon an initial sip, fig definitely stands out as the dominant flavor. It a very good beer with deep, rich fruit flavors. I’m not quite sure what I was getting, but it was dark, rich, and bold. A very rich brew.

11.2 fl oz (thanks to Jessica). This was a great choice! Mellow notes on the aroma, yet very pleasant. Nutty German cookies is what comes to mind. Also, some caramel, light citrus, earthy grass, buttered rolls, and a light herbal spice. A gorgeous beer as well. Huge creamy ivory colored head, nice retention and lacing, a cloudy, mostly opaque, fiery copper colored body. With the taste, a medium full feel, quite smooth and buttery with just enough crisp punch. A zesty grass permeates through out and lingers nicely past the finish with nice cookie malts to balance it out. Also, light citrus, caramel, and lightly nutty cereal grains. Overall, a very drinkable beer, that I feel would work great at anytime of the year, not just the two dates described. Would definitely be a go to beer if in Germany and it were available year round.

Bottle from pivnizub, děkuji. Dark amber color with small beige head. Aroma of dried red fruit, flowery hints, caramel. Taste, starts as little bit as medicine, then continues with caramel, malt, some brandy like hints. Long bitter, alcoholic finish. Nice.
