dark amber color with an egg-white head. some floral grassy hops, which is surprising from a dark beer. however, there is a bigger malt presence in the flavor, along with some caramel, cinnamon and spice. plus it comes in a cool bottle. really a textbook example of the style.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 SpringsLicker (2486) - Tennessee, USA - AUG 23, 2004
UPDATED: AUG 27, 2004 Deep glowing brown color, almost cola-like with a minimal tan head that settles into an off white ring at the top of the glass. The aroma is like toasted mashmallows.
Caramel flavor with just a touch of bitterness in the finish. Light bodied with a medium mouthfeel. An easy drinking brew.

Bottle. Cool one at that. Pours a dark amber/brown color with small off-white head. Aroma is bready, malty, and clean. No hop aroma as I would expect. The flavor is strongly malty with a subdued bitterness. Finishes slightly dry. A very nice treat.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 jefcon (1104) - Arlington, Virginia, USA - OCT 1, 2006
Dark for a kolsch, with a good-looking head. Aromas of dry leaves and caramel. Lots of body, good level of carbonation. Flavors are malty and dry. Much more hop presence on the tongue than the nose. Also almond and earthy flavors. An interesting, and assertive, alt.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 redlight (2209) - Winter Park, Florida, USA - DEC 9, 2008
draft at redlight redlight. Hoppy, piney nose with caramel malt notes. Pours a golden amber with a thick white head. Hoppy bitterness is the first flavor to assert itself. Rich caramelly malts come next, caramelized sugars, finishes with an almost lager-like bite, very crisp finish. Very enjoyable, and fresh tasting.

On tap at the brickstore. Pours a clean brown color with a big off white head that fades fast. Aromas of big malt, caramel, and bread. As it warms the texture of this thing gets really grainy and chewy malt. Pretty dry with a hint of bittering hops on the finish. The story here though is the malt and grain experience which is well worth the time and money on this one.

33 cl bottle on 1/22/2008. Nearly clear deep orange/mahogany under a frothy medium light tan head. Toffee like aroma with hints of pine, spice, and vanilla. Medium body and carbonation, mild astringency that leaves a dry palate. Up front bitterness over a backdrop of caramel sweetness that remains well hidden. Finish is long and mildly bitter. A toned down version of its big brother, Doppelsticke, but very good in its own right.

UPDATED: JUN 29, 2008 Rerate. Bottled on 02.11. Code 12 02. Clear amber orange with a 1 1/2 finger off-white head, great retention. Aroma has some spicy citrus--not necessarily Pac NW hops--up front with lots of sweet toffee and caramel malts. A bit earthy and dry. The flavor adds a bit of a buttery caramel note and a bit of sulfurous skunkyness. Earthy dry finish (redundant?) with bitterness that peaked around a 4. Light to moderate carbonation with a medium body. Very nice beer, overall. Old rating follows. 11.2oz., Bottled on 25.11. Pours a clear copper brown with a moderate, very light beige head. Aroma of caramel, nuts, grain, a little grass. Hops make a bigger showing in the taste up front with a fair amount of bitterness. Creamy, medium body with soft carbonation. Very nice alt--I’m looking forward to their other two alt’s. 7-3-7-4-14--3.5
