3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 FlacoAlto (3086) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - AUG 17, 2005
UPDATED: AUG 28, 2005 Bottled January 31, 2005, Sampled August 2005
Pours a brilliantly clear ruby amber color that is topped by a frothy, thinnish, tan colored head. The aroma is quite fruity with notes of brandy, and rum, hints of strawberry, citrus and lightly spicy notes. Actually a fairly interesting aroma that is still intriguing after these 6 months. The taste is lightly sweet and fairly malty with notes of caramel. This is quite fruity as well with notes of cherry, raisins, and a bit of strawberry and some notes of bergemot as well. For some reason the fruity character in an Alt I have always associated as an interesting mix of hop and malt character. This has held up much better, in the voyage across the Atlantic, than the regular Alt did, though it stills suffers quite a bit from the voyage.

Brownish red (MilkmanDan hit the nail on the head "tea-colored", very nice dense off-white head. Glass lacing is very nice also. Light malty caramel aroma along with a hint of some funk, the good kind. The flavor is roasted malt sweetness and bitterness, a good dose of hops followed by some maltiness. The hops are surprisingly strong but lead to an overall pleasing experience. he body is surprisingly light given the color and the overall level of flavor complexities. Very nice beer.

UPDATED: MAR 8, 2005 Hazy mahogany with a medium frothy light brown head. Sweet aroma of cookie, dough, caramel, hazelnut and plum. Medium velvety body with a moderate amount of carbonation. Mostly sweet flavor of caramel, hazelnut, plum, raisin, smoke, and brown sugar. Very smooth and drinkable. Very good.

Clear amber pour with a thin offwhite head. Nice aroma of bread, fruits and spices. The flavor is very pleasant with it’s bread, spices and fruits, it finishes slightly tart and slightly bitter. The body is medium with an oily texture and moderate carbonation. Nicely done.

Gigantic foamy billowing head. The swing top actually popped and spritzed almost like champagne. Altbier? Seasonal? Hmm ... hops presence on the nose with a sly mix of sweeter malt. Good combo - almost like a solid IPA mixed with a top brown sweet ale. Sharp clear tawny hue. Fresh crisp finish. Cool sleek unique looking bottle. Enjoyable bier!

Pours lightish redbrown with some head that disperses within a minute. Malty light caramel notes, finishes sharp hoppy. Above average, not wildly impressive. I would try again. Enjoyed chilled from bottle, poured into glass.

This dark amber altbier pours with very little head and elicits very little aroma. However, it is a fine example of the style, with a slightly bitter and very satisfying caramel malt flavor. If you ever get to Dusseldorf, stop by Zum Uerige and try their home-made sausage, which complements their beer very nicely.

Murky, muddy dark-brown pour with a small white cap. Lots of mixed fruits and yeast, leading to a bready malt aroma. Subtle and light, this has a malt contingency mixed with some woody notes and a small earthen hop to finish the pull. Caramel malts are integrated, again subtly, without being "hidden". Woody afternotes show this brew’s complexity from beginning to finish. The oily mouthfeel makes the pull highly drinkable, and would make for a good session brew.
