UPDATED: MAR 8, 2005 Hazy mahogany with a medium frothy light brown head. Sweet aroma of cookie, dough, caramel, hazelnut and plum. Medium velvety body with a moderate amount of carbonation. Mostly sweet flavor of caramel, hazelnut, plum, raisin, smoke, and brown sugar. Very smooth and drinkable. Very good.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Classic altbier from one of the originals. Clear dark brown, dark and smoky, roast grains and nuts. Bitterness comes more from the roast grains than the hops. This is an altbier against which to judge all others.

33cl bottles from source 02/2014 ("bottled on 13.06"?), from online shop on earlier occasions in 2012. Would have sworn I remember this pouring much lighter than the deep chestnut brown. Rich and creamy caramalt notes, plum and roast supersede the leafy natural hop notes from the basic version, a bit of a shame. Quite filling and not as unique, woody and Pale ale-ish as Uerige Alt, more of an odd Dunkel.

Bottle looks really good, nice format. Beer in the glass dark brown, huge head. Starts strong-malty, modest sourish, some fruity hints of plum. More and more earthy-dry, bitter background. Finish still with nice dry notes, modest sourish. Good beer!

Pours Dark brown with a huge fluffy head with massive lacing. The head retention is amazing. Slightly sour grain aroma, with resin and leather notes. Mouth feel is thick and a little sticky, and there are lots of piney hops on the finish. Lots of dark fruit, spices, and nutty caramel flavors. Really quite nice. A classic alt. Tasted at 58.8F.

Classic flip top bottle served in a Dogfish Head IPA glass. Why not?
A - Dark ruddy brown with a small tan cap that slowly dissipates.
S - Sticky dark malts, raisins, dates, cooked caramel, dark bread, molasses, deep malt aroma, honey sweetness, really yeasty as it sets.
T - Follows the nose with big dark bread malt, sticky dates, nutty, burnt/charred fig bread, vanilla, spicy hops adds some peppery bitterness. Sweet and rich caramel, with a wheat cracker like dryness overtaking the sweetness. Grassy hops and dark bread crust create a dry rustic finish.
M - Rich feel, chewy body, carbonation is right on, dry spicy finish.
Awesome! Sweet and rich but with a sweeping dryness. Spicy hops really showed up to combat the deep dark bready malts. I loved the sweet nutty caramel malt seemed sweet but actually was not. Almost like tricking your brain. Great layering effects and a standout brew for sure.

The nose is spectacular. There is a malty bearing on the nose that promises richness and depth. It’s sweet but not cloying. It’s rich but not too nutty. There is a brilliant hop character on the nose that is at once both vibrant and restrained. It is as though a bountiful fruit character wants to explode from them but instead you have a perfect floral sweetness. A succulence that is the essence of the hops it self without embellishment. There is a bit of spice or pepper to the nose that is firm but not too loud.
The mouthfeel is incredible. Smooth, full of flavor and yet light. It travels with ease over the palate with the grain sporting a bit of dapper complexity even thought it does not evidence many flavors. It has a layered sweet presence that deepens and enriches the beer. It is also a dry grain that takes the mid palate. There is a bounty of hops on the palate that never evidence any fruit you can name although they seem ready to burst forth. They are sweet and delectable in and of themselves and their restraint is no loss to the perfect balance of this beer. Smooth. Not bitter although you can taste the bitter from the hops subtly as if a shadow. A touch fo alcohol grazes the palate and it is finished now.
This beer is pristine and wonderful. It is brewed with care and expertly in accord with the purity laws of 1516. A masterpiece waiting to delight you with it’s malt richness, with the bounty of the hop flower, clean and crisp as much from malt as from carbonation. Excellent!

Bottle into goblet. Hazy dark brown, faint whisper of a head. Sweet nose, suggests light brown sugar or caramel. Hoppier than expected in the mouth, with grapefruit and Pune notes n malt congee through in the middle some, and finishes with more hops n
