Sample from Jan 06 Indy gathering at BW3 downtown - Anniversary X 2003 vintage - Aroma is carmel, date, fig, and hops. Pours mud puddle brown with little head and some lacing. Flavor matches aroma and hides alcohol well. Palate is clean. A nicely aged easy drinking BW.

Rating is for the XII. Clear, ruby brown with moderate, transient head. Black cherry, brown sugar, molasses and wet grain are exhibited in the aroma. The aroma suggests that the beer will be rich and sweet, which is contradicted upon the first sip. The flavor has surprisingly light, sunny malt notes with cocoa and some dry caramel. More than anything, there is massive hop bitterness underpinned by some fairly assertive piney attributes. The bitterness really dries out and overwhelms any residual sweetness that might be left in the beer. The alcohol level is well hidden. Residual bitterness leaves the mouth puckered for a long time, but not in that good Bigfoot sort of way. This is more coarse and unrefined - unwelcome. Too dry and conspicuously low on hop aroma for my tastes.

Pours a dark reddish brown color. Aromas of dark fruit, malts, a citrus hops. Flavor had big alcohol taste mixed a nice hop action and lots of fruit and malt flavors.

2004. Clear ruby-tinged brown, but it’s really more brown than red. Great yellow head. The aroma screams pinene and toffee like seemingly every US beer I have lately. Some strawberry jam and buttered toast (as opposed to strawberry jam on toast, obviously there’s a big difference there.) Tastes way hoppier than I expected, though it’s really just quite a harsh bitterness that is very much apparent from the get-go and kinda spoils the whole thing. There are some other subtle, piney, hop flavours but it’s quite light in both body and malt. There’s a fair bit of alcohol in there too, but it’s really all about that pine. Tastes young and a bit simplistic, but still an enjoyable enough drink.

A very malty brew. Pours dark. Aroma of alcohol and dark fruit. Finish is sweet and alcoholic.

Pours dark amber and a foamy golden head. Nice aroma of sweet malt and bitter hops with a good fruityness. Good balance. Malty and hoppy flavor, nutty notes. Foamy mouthfull. An easy drinkable barley wine, good but not outstanding.

Murky brownish-orange color. Malty aroma was sweet and fruit fruity with a faiir amount of toffee. some citrus hop. Flavor of sweet dark fruits.

Another gputty-supplied beer. gputty is da man! 12 oz bottle, 2004 vintage. Reddish brown pour, small tan head. Sweet nose, citrusy but with malty undertones. Toffee and dark brown sugar flavors, toaty malts. REALLY liked this one!

Bottle poured a hazy red with a small amber head. Aromas of molasses, dark fruit, and maple. Palate was medium bodied and dry. Flavors of dark fruit, brown sugar, and toffee with a dry finish.

Sampled as XI (2004), Bottle: Heavy grapefruit and citrus aroma, hints of butterscotch and pears, distinct floral hopping; thin and dry, substantially bitter and rough throughout; simple malt profile heavy on carmelized toffee and hotly alcoholic flavor (1 yr old?!?) ; harsh and unrefined.
