COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First brewed in small batches annually to commemorate Uinta’s anniversary, this soul-warming brew is now available year-round. (Uinta’s anniversary is observed and noted by the change of the roman numeral on the label.) Uinta’s award winning barley wine has a dark amber hue with a rich malty character. Serious amounts of hops are used to balance its hardy alcohol content of over 10% ABV. Originating in England in the nineteenth century, barley wines are brewed with the same traditional ingredients as beer: water, malted barley, hops and yeast. There are no grapes or fruit used in the brewing process. The name “barley wine” refers to its alcohol content being similar to that of most wines, ranging from 8.5% to 14% ABV. Unlike most beers, barley wines age remarkably well. If you have the will power, set an Anniversary Barley Wine aside for a year or more.

UPDATED: FEB 2, 2011 Bottle of XIV. Good head with a amber color. Great sweet taste mixed with a roasted almost fruity flavor. Amazing low key bitter aftertaste that makes this brew both complex and great. 10.4% yet the beer is both smooth and easy to drink. Great job Uinta! Re-rate: I’ve had this so many times, my go to beer for sure. The XV vintage is just as tasty. Lots of fruity flavors, a nice creamy mouthfeel. I’m damn glad to be able to get this beer everyday. OK, Mikey cracked open a XI vintage, still very nice and a awesome aroma. A bit sour in the finish, but still really nice. XVI vintage; wow, this is one hell of a beer fresh. Only 40 days old. The aroma is heavy hops, rich and piny. The flavor also has a heavy load of hops, rich and awesome. My favorite Uinta Barley Wine to date. Simply awesome and a top notch beer. Another fresh XVI, very nice. A 12oz bottle is never enough. A great beer. Loads of rich caramel and bitter hops. Re-rate: XVI, about 45 days old. Hoppy and aggressive. I’m always amazed how hoppy this beer is when really fresh. New vintage: XVII, made Dec 30th, about a month old. Pure goodness. Huge caramel and bitter hops. Hot and aggressive.

Bottle of the XIII vintage: Pours a dark amber color with a small, creamy beige head. Good lacing. Nose is malt oriented with some citrus and fruitiness. Flavor is rich maltiness, with a crisp citrus hops, fruitiness, and some caramel. Nice, crisp hops in the tail.

Pours a hazy dark red with a thick creamy coffee foam head. It’s actually a surprisingly dark head considering the color of the beer. Minty hops atop alcohol and cookie malt. The body is surprisingly dry, leaving a very short finish. For once, I’ve found a barleywine where I actually wish there were a little more sweetness and body.

Thanks to JoeMcphee for this beer! A pretty good barleywine overall. Reddish-brown body, with a few sparse, soapy bubbles around the sides of the glass. Full body, without too much alcohol astringency. Smooth, and easy to drink. Some roasty notes coupled with a pleasant bitterness from the nice array of hop characters. Nice.

Thanks to JoeMcphee for giving us this bottle (a new state for me!) - 13th anniversary version - medium amber pour, with no head to speak of - fairly complex aroma, with caramel and roasted malts, flaked oats, brown sugar, green hops, woody touches, and hints of whiskey - low carbonation, pretty full-bodied - piney hops up front, with a fairly high bitterness (not quite bigfoot-like, but close) - cherry, plum and other darker fruit notes - brown sugar and caramel, with some roasty hints around the edges - burnt notes/caramelized sugar in the finish - well-masked alcohol - a pretty good barleywine, but still a little young.

Bottle of the XIII version; poured a reddish amber w/ not much head. Aroma was of swee caramel malt, fruit, citrus and pine. This one could definitely use some aging. Flavor wasn’t as blended and developed as it could be. Whole mess of roasted malt, caramel, dark fruit, sweetness, with substantial ending bitterness. Mouthfeel was a little off; actually a bit watery. Best days are ahead for it...

Pours into a nice looking brew, but the head fades quick. Smell is a little sweet, and malty. Interesting taste. Not over the top on anything, but full of a bunch of different things. Can’t quite place it, but something burnt, or roasted. Very good drinkability for the 10.4%

12oz bottle-pours a light tan head and dark red/mahogany color. Aroma is dark fruit-cherry, plum, sweet medium malt-caramel. Taste is dark fruit-cherry, plum, sweet medium malt-caramel, very bitter-medium hops, vinuous. Nicely done, not my style. OK carbonation.

Bottle. A fairly young sample (bottled 11/09/06) of XIII. Huge hoppy aroma fills the room, very intense! Grapefruit, some toastiness. Orange and ripe fruit. Lots of malt. Deep ruby pour with a rich, luscious creamy tanned head. As for taste, a strong hop bitterness with some resin, but doesn’t sting. Splash of cookie dough. Good firm malt, stands up to the strong hoppage and lends an elegant balance. Very full body with a dry, bitter, hop-bitten finish and aftertaste. Pleasant but hefty warming. Closest comparison is Bigfoot, but with a way to go before matching. Wish I’d has a few more to lay down (wink, wink). Thanks, Jake!

Pours a one finger light brown head that fades quickly to a thin layer leaving some lace. Cloudy amber color. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Caramel nose. Flavor is sweet but balanced, hops hit right at finish with hints of the high ABV. Lingering bitter after taste. $1.95 for 12th anniversary, 12oz bottle from Utah DABC Salt Lake City, UT.
