First brewed in small batches annually to commemorate Uinta’s anniversary, this soul-warming brew is now available year-round. (Uinta’s anniversary is observed and noted by the change of the roman numeral on the label.) Uinta’s award winning barley wine has a dark amber hue with a rich malty character. Serious amounts of hops are used to balance its hardy alcohol content of over 10% ABV. Originating in England in the nineteenth century, barley wines are brewed with the same traditional ingredients as beer: water, malted barley, hops and yeast. There are no grapes or fruit used in the brewing process. The name “barley wine” refers to its alcohol content being similar to that of most wines, ranging from 8.5% to 14% ABV. Unlike most beers, barley wines age remarkably well. If you have the will power, set an Anniversary Barley Wine aside for a year or more.

2004. Cloudy, moderately dark brown pour. Small frothy head fades slowly. Appearance is similar to a fresh wee heavy. Aroma lets forth light oxidation initially, then caramel malts on a grandiose scale, unripe dark fruits(plum, cherry), mild toast and graham cracker. Piney hops bring in the rear. Flavor is deeply scorched grainy malts, some hoppy resins. Caramel malts steal the show in mid-mouthfeel, but it too feels heavily scorched. Finishes dry and massively burned, with a bitterness that borders on excessive. Palate is much lighter than expected. Any balance this beer once held has left the flavor, and aroma, long ago. Far too bitter without substantial malt in the second half of the quaff. Glad to try this but it’s not interesting enough to warrant another sample.

Courtesy boboski. Very dark ruby/brown. 1.5cm forhty, off white head. Roasty and sweet caramel/toffee/cookie malt, venomous pine resin hops, dark fruits, and lightly pungent perfume. Flavor is similar but turned down in volume and adds a dry, airy yeastiness. Very nice dry, chocolate-caramel cookie aftertaste. Body is lighter than anticipated, medium and with balanced carbonation. Decent bw.

At the Barleywine festival (Toronado SF) Pours a slightly hazy dark amber with a nice long lasting off white head Nose of vanilla, orange, some sherry and slight caramel along with a sizeable blast of citrusy hop notes PalateMedium bodied... with restrained carbonation which along with the hop balance keep the malt incheck Taste: When cold rather one dimensional with some caramel and citrusy bite... as it warms up.. layers of vanilla orange blossom and some alcohol warmth with sherry like notes and a woody hop flavors showthru Overall: A rather underrated (underground) barleywine.. who can argue with 3rd place in 2007 (Yep ! I was a judge there) a complex barley wine absolutely worth seeking out.. just make sure you DO NOT drink it cold.. let it warm up and the magic begins

12oz Bottle 13th Anniversary Pours out a dark amber topped with an off white head. A Great aroma of HOPS. This one was more like a Double IPA than a BW. The beer was very good. But not what I was expecting.

Anniversary bottle. A very underrated beer IMO. I’ve never tried a beer from this brewery so my first bere out of the gate was very nice. Aroma is hopped up with a grapefruit bitterness that is nicely balance with a subtle malt sweetness. Appearance is brown in color, minimal white head. Mouthfeel is slightly sticky, full bodied and agressive. Flavors are hoppy, malty, caramel but not overly sweet like an English b/w. This is a pure American b/w and it’s outstanding. Well done.

10th anniversary, ’03 bottle. Deep mahogany pour with a thin off-white head. Aroma is full of toffee, alcohol, and a bit of dark fruit. Flavor is sweet and malty. Mouthfeel is thin and quite dry. Overall, it’s not a bad beer, but nothing special. Very boozy as it warms. I can see it being good on a cold day.

2005 bottle, 12th anniversary shared by jerc. Warm dark amber colour with a mostly diminishing frothy tan head. Fresh oranges and other citrus aroma, light caramel notes. Toffee, orange flavours with a harsh yeasty bitter finish - possibly vegemite? No hop flavour, only bitterness, plus limited sweetness, perhaps overattenuated and too dry for the bitterness. Light to medium bodied.

Bottle. 12th Anniversary. Dark brown body, good fingers worth of luscious creamy beige head. Hoppy, tangy malt aroma is moderate. Booze emerges as the glass warms. Flavour is dominated by green vine like, not quite leafy, full hops bitterness that is not always pleasant as it lacks sufficient hop flavour to balance it. Needs more hop in the flavour or less bitterness to let the muted caramel malt shine through - needs to pick a direction. Average to medium palate. (3+) Big rough around the edges.

Big thanks to Brock_Landers for this one, the XII version. Pours hazy ruby with 1-finger khaki head. Aroma of heavy dark fruit, including figs, caramel malt, earthy notes. Tastes fruity, earthy, and malty, with the caramel malt, burny molasses, figs, pears, cognac, and black currant flavor emerging as it warms. Dense palate with a compex nose and flavor, this one hides its behemoth load of alcohol very well. This is a remarkable beer, and one I’m glad to have ad the chance to have quaffed.

Excellent American barleywine. Big hoppy nose, gorgeous reddish amber color; very complex, flavorful beer with a nice balance of hops and malt. Loved it.
