First brewed in small batches annually to commemorate Uinta’s anniversary, this soul-warming brew is now available year-round. (Uinta’s anniversary is observed and noted by the change of the roman numeral on the label.) Uinta’s award winning barley wine has a dark amber hue with a rich malty character. Serious amounts of hops are used to balance its hardy alcohol content of over 10% ABV. Originating in England in the nineteenth century, barley wines are brewed with the same traditional ingredients as beer: water, malted barley, hops and yeast. There are no grapes or fruit used in the brewing process. The name “barley wine” refers to its alcohol content being similar to that of most wines, ranging from 8.5% to 14% ABV. Unlike most beers, barley wines age remarkably well. If you have the will power, set an Anniversary Barley Wine aside for a year or more.

Pours clear dark amber with a thin tan head. Aroma of citrus, caramel and fresh mowed hay. Taste is malty and bittersweet. Masks the ABV well.

Draft at the 4th Annual Mad Fox Barleywine Fest (Sunday), 2011 vintage if I’m not mistaken. Poured a very dark ruby, slightly hazy note, with a medium sized white head. Aroma was some muted pine, caramel malts, light pine hops. Flavor was about the same, booze on the finish, pine, mellowed out sweet malted notes.

Okay, its not a bad beer, a bit big and malty with stale cardboard type notes, but not bad. little thick and the 10% is definitely there.

Bottle from 16 Tons Taphouse, Eugene. Pours a rich reddish brown, slight amount of tan head. Aroma dull caramel, some resin and fresh line overtones. Body full and lively, not at all syrupy. Finish sweet and treacly, with a woody pine character. Aroma underwhelming but otherwise really nice, especially for the money.

10.4%, Beautiful deep dark amber brown color with small tan head and messy lacing. Aroma and flavor have strong caramel malt notes with a strong hoppy bitter finish. Pretty good overall.

Ruby pour. Medium light brown head. Lots of lacing. Orange hop aroma. Dark fruit, raisin. Slight boozy. Burnt candy. Well balance flavor. A lot of the same flavors as aroma. Some chocolate and soil like flavors also. ---Rated via iPhone

Dark, clear, brownish-amber with a puffy cream colored head that deposits a nice sheen of lacing. Aroma of sweet bread, caramel, dried dark fruits, and citrus. The taste is sweet and malty with a moderate bitterness and fairly mild alcohol flavor. Medium-full bodied, lightly carbonated, and just a touch of boozy dryness. Pretty good stuff here.

The nose is hop forward - primarily citrus. Pours a cloudy maghogny with a thin tan head and minimal lacing. The taste is bitter. Pine, citrus, toasted malt with a little alcohol appearing in the finish. Medium body and medium carbonation. Overall, sadly, if it wasn’t for the high ABV, the taste is more like a well crafted black IPA than a barley wine.

Pours three fingers of head on a clear but dark red to brown colored body. The aroma is excellent. Lots of lemon, grapefruit and pine with a mix of candy. The taste is candied lemon, grain, mild bitterness at the end. The texture is fairly crisp for a barley wine with moderate carbonation. It’s probably one of the more easy drinking barley wines and it’s good.
