COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First brewed in small batches annually to commemorate Uinta’s anniversary, this soul-warming brew is now available year-round. (Uinta’s anniversary is observed and noted by the change of the roman numeral on the label.) Uinta’s award winning barley wine has a dark amber hue with a rich malty character. Serious amounts of hops are used to balance its hardy alcohol content of over 10% ABV. Originating in England in the nineteenth century, barley wines are brewed with the same traditional ingredients as beer: water, malted barley, hops and yeast. There are no grapes or fruit used in the brewing process. The name “barley wine” refers to its alcohol content being similar to that of most wines, ranging from 8.5% to 14% ABV. Unlike most beers, barley wines age remarkably well. If you have the will power, set an Anniversary Barley Wine aside for a year or more.

Pours deep mahogany with Amber hues in the light. Aromas of rich salty caramel, toffee, subtle woodiness, plum, pine resin, and a little alcohol. Taste is bready and sweet with a big dark fruit presence, toffee and caramel with bold hop bitterness, pine resin, and slightly floral. Chewy mouthful. Finish is sweet with a calming bitter acidity. Slightly astringent.

A very good commercial Barleywine. Aroma is inviting without being alcohol hot. Initial taste is smooth building to malty forwardness. Fruity esters are well balanced and not too strong. A very decent commercial Barleywine.

I’ve had this many times over the years, including on tap at the Toronado in San Francisco years ago when they tied for the bronze. In front of me is a 12 oz bottled that says best before 1/29/14. Pours a rich brown with large brown head and lace. Aroma of rich malts and earth. Medium carbonation and significant moughfeel. Flavors of malt balls, caramel, baking chocolate, leather, straw hops, carob. Overall big and bold with a significant smoothness through until a slightly bitter chocolate, dry finish.

Bottled 07JAN13 Dark brown with ruby hues, a thick quilt of light caramel. Smells uber-fruity: plums, raisin, some spiced persimmon. Then there’s a hit of brewer’s licorice, vanilla, and burnt sugar mixed with vinyl. Taste is booze, then some bitterness, then some sweet malts, then some more booze. Really can taste the ethanol here - in a bad way. Medium body with moderate, tickle carb and a semi dry finish. I’m uncertain I’m gonna finish this. Waaaay too boozy.

happy dark berry aromas, malts and some alc. Light tan head and dark ryst colored body. Some hops, tart grape, and earthy barley flavors. A little hot

Aromas of caramel, orange, slight gingerbread, and nutty aromas, with some booze. Mostly clear, ruby complexion, with visible yeast. Off-dry, strong, fruity, with notes of raisin and dried apricot, and balanced nicely by later hop bitterness. Medium-full bodied, warming.

Bottle. Mahogany colored with a layer of sudsy tan foam and bubbles. Mild notes of citrus, caramel malt, dark fruits and pine resin in the aroma. Taste opens up with a fair amount of toasted malt, caramelized sugars and toffee along with some raisin and citrus rind toward the end. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with a bit of creaminess and low carbonation. Definitely on the hoppier end of the spectrum for a Barley Wine.

Pours a deep brown amber color with a finger of eggshell foam. Lots of sweet caramel and boozy earth on the nose. The palate is big and round with lots of subtle sweet malt character that mingles nicely with earthy rustic grain, toasted notes, booze creeps in the midpalate then smooths out with a touch of bitter walnut on the finish. Nice.
