First brewed in small batches annually to commemorate Uinta’s anniversary, this soul-warming brew is now available year-round. (Uinta’s anniversary is observed and noted by the change of the roman numeral on the label.) Uinta’s award winning barley wine has a dark amber hue with a rich malty character. Serious amounts of hops are used to balance its hardy alcohol content of over 10% ABV. Originating in England in the nineteenth century, barley wines are brewed with the same traditional ingredients as beer: water, malted barley, hops and yeast. There are no grapes or fruit used in the brewing process. The name “barley wine” refers to its alcohol content being similar to that of most wines, ranging from 8.5% to 14% ABV. Unlike most beers, barley wines age remarkably well. If you have the will power, set an Anniversary Barley Wine aside for a year or more.

Pours a dark reddish brown color with a lacy off white head. Notes of burnt caramel, orange citrus, cereal, and chocolate. Supple mouthfeel, grainy finish.

The nose is hop forward - primarily citrus. Pours a cloudy maghogny with a thin tan head and minimal lacing. The taste is bitter. Pine, citrus, toasted malt with a little alcohol appearing in the finish. Medium body and medium carbonation.

4 pack best before August 19, 2014 purchased from Argonaut. Pours on the darker side of barleywines. This one is very dark brown, almost the color of a porter with a thin ring of an off white head. The aroma is quite pleasant. American hops peek out from a hearty malt body with notes at vanilla, berries and molasses. The palate isn’t as heavy as I expected and the flavor isn’t as sweet. There are heavy earthy notes and plenty of bittering hops to keep this balanced. Hints at figs, nuts and molasses make up the malty flavor. Faint fruity esters add a little complexity. It’s nice that this one doesn’t beat my palate with sugars or alcohol, but still maintains a barleywine identity.

Poured a deep russet with a thin head. Aroma of mild malt. Typical American barley wine, too hoppy for the style.

Good barley wine. Expected a little more though. Plum hue. Boozy, malty aroma. Thin head. Swirly. Great start but the wash down lacks carbonation. Not a very balanced brew even with the 10 ABV. It lacks a bitterness that seems to be the mark of a great barleywine. It seems a tad safe and not in the manner for example The Alaskan Barleywine. It is good but not as the brand subscribes us to believe.

Pours clear dark amber with a thin tan head. Aroma of citrus, caramel and fresh mowed hay. Taste is malty and bittersweet. Masks the ABV well.

Draft at the 4th Annual Mad Fox Barleywine Fest (Sunday), 2011 vintage if I’m not mistaken. Poured a very dark ruby, slightly hazy note, with a medium sized white head. Aroma was some muted pine, caramel malts, light pine hops. Flavor was about the same, booze on the finish, pine, mellowed out sweet malted notes.

Bottled, dark walnut amber color with no head, lots of maple syrup and red velvet cake, some prickly hops and cream, nice barleywine

Okay, its not a bad beer, a bit big and malty with stale cardboard type notes, but not bad. little thick and the 10% is definitely there.

Bottle from 16 Tons Taphouse, Eugene. Pours a rich reddish brown, slight amount of tan head. Aroma dull caramel, some resin and fresh line overtones. Body full and lively, not at all syrupy. Finish sweet and treacly, with a woody pine character. Aroma underwhelming but otherwise really nice, especially for the money.
