First brewed in small batches annually to commemorate Uinta’s anniversary, this soul-warming brew is now available year-round. (Uinta’s anniversary is observed and noted by the change of the roman numeral on the label.) Uinta’s award winning barley wine has a dark amber hue with a rich malty character. Serious amounts of hops are used to balance its hardy alcohol content of over 10% ABV. Originating in England in the nineteenth century, barley wines are brewed with the same traditional ingredients as beer: water, malted barley, hops and yeast. There are no grapes or fruit used in the brewing process. The name “barley wine” refers to its alcohol content being similar to that of most wines, ranging from 8.5% to 14% ABV. Unlike most beers, barley wines age remarkably well. If you have the will power, set an Anniversary Barley Wine aside for a year or more.

From a bottle. Pours rich dark brown with minimal head. Smooth feel. Tastes like coffee, dates, raisins, but the flavor is not too strong. Smells like plums and walnuts. Full body and light carbonation. Really good but not much like a barley wine.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a trace of thin, creamy beige head; shirt retention and minimal lacing. Aroma is roast and caramel malts, chocolate, plums, figs, floral and earthy hops, and light booze. Flavor is rich, roast and chocolate malts forward with supporting notes of coffee, earthy hops, dark fruit esters, and light ash; subtle alcohol throughout with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and low carbonation.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/22/20111. Pours very hazy and cloudy; almost opaque dark brown color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of caramel, toast, pine, raisin, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, citrus zest, floral, and piney earthiness. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity; but are pretty weak for a barleywine. Taste of toffee, toast, caramel, raisin, brown sugar, pine, brown bread, floral, grapefruit, orange zest, light chocolate, and toasted earthiness. Light pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of toffee, caramel, toast, raisin, pine, brown sugar, brown bread, grapefruit, orange zest, light chocolate, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance of malt complexity; with a good amount of hop balance; and zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy, slick, and fairly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice barleywine style. Good balance and complexity of malt and hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

12 oz. bottle- Pours dark cherry red with a nice light one finger tan head that slowly reduces. Aroma is sweet, candy sugar, dark fruits, not your in your face intense aromas from most barley wines. The taste is barley wineish, only with that dark fruit component, similar to a Belgian Quad actually, kind of a blend of the two in my opinion. Smooth for the style, alcohol is noticeable, but well hidden actually. This is one of the better BW’s I have had in a while.

12 oz bottle - pours dark brown-burgundy with huge white-tan head, lasting, cascading, beautiful lacing. Aromas of big malty goodness, dark cherries, plums, and some nice grassy hops. Bit of vanilla oak too. Taste is nice and balanced between warm malts, sweeter oak, candied fruit, and nice bitter hoppy ending. Warmer fer shark. Good deal.

Bottle from Five Points Bottle Shop (Atlanta Highway) in Athens. Big rounded caramel nose, with some piney hops. Dull dark brown, thin head, some lace. Large-scale chunky caramel initial / mid goes to a bit of harshness as the hops kick in / some more mild caramel and then a balanced aftertaste. Medium body. A bit thin. Not bad, really. Alc, is pretty well disquised.

Really awesome beer with good hop balance. What would be super sweet or super hopped turns into a super beer. This would be rated higher but had a strong bottle bottle cap aroma at first pour. Yet pretty much top beer from Utah other than that. No head however ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a rich caramel color with a slight head that leaves some lace. The aroma isn’t very strong. There’s some malt and a little honey in the smell, but it isn’t overpowering with sweetness, which is something I often dislike about barley wine. Where this thing really stands out is the flavor. Huge, huge strong malt and only a slight background sweetness, and some bitter hops in the flavor. It’s crisp, not syrupy like some barley wine can be. This thing might disappoint some barley wine fans, but for someone like me who isn’t in love with the style, this is very good.
