COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First brewed in small batches annually to commemorate Uinta’s anniversary, this soul-warming brew is now available year-round. (Uinta’s anniversary is observed and noted by the change of the roman numeral on the label.) Uinta’s award winning barley wine has a dark amber hue with a rich malty character. Serious amounts of hops are used to balance its hardy alcohol content of over 10% ABV. Originating in England in the nineteenth century, barley wines are brewed with the same traditional ingredients as beer: water, malted barley, hops and yeast. There are no grapes or fruit used in the brewing process. The name “barley wine” refers to its alcohol content being similar to that of most wines, ranging from 8.5% to 14% ABV. Unlike most beers, barley wines age remarkably well. If you have the will power, set an Anniversary Barley Wine aside for a year or more.

Poured into a wine glass. Fruity and toffee aroma. Taste of bread, caramel, herbs and alcohol. Maybe a little bit thin for the style and not big enough.

Pours a nice dark amber. Aroma of malt and caramel. Tasty with a nice palate too. Kinda sweet, but pretty well balanced with the high abv.

Velvet hammer here. Appearance is a large, long lasting, tan to cream-colored, thick head, plenty of lace, and a clear, dark amber hue. Aroma is leather, dark ripe fruit, dark malt, yeast, hops, and lumber. Flavor’s similar to nose, with sweet being up front and bitter heavy in the finish and just right carbonic tang to balance. Body is good, but the heavy bitter yields some coarseness. Ditto for the finish, with some off flavors, though overall, I’d definitely have, just not right away. I’d be especially curious to try it with some aging.

A couple months at cellar temp has the expected results with less hop influence, while also allowing the exceptional texture to shine a bit more, +1 on Palate

Fresh review on Feb 28, 2015 : Ruby highlights adorn a mahogany body beneath a slowly fading, rocky faint tan head creating intricate lace all around

Classic American barley wine aromas and flavors, stanky dank, dark and red berries, herbs and citrus balanced over sweet cherry malt notes on the beautifully smooth signature Uinta texture, medium weight offering coffee cake and toffee leading to a piney, complex residual full of the previously mentioned components

12oz bottle best before 05/04/15H served at 50° into Stölzle Swirl Red Wine glass

12 fl oz bottle from BOTW (Rochester), served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. Deep ruby-mahogany with a nice reddish-tan head. Rich, deep, lightly peppery malt, dark treacle and toffee, brown sugar and faint molasses, booze, green and resinous hops big, nice. Medium+ body with fine, relaxed carbonation. Deep, dark malt, resinous, peppery hops, brown sugar, dark dried fruitiness, so dark and spicy; sweet with big bitterness and a long, spicy / peppery finish. Big.

I shy away from barley wines, fearing them to be unbalanced malt bombs, but this one is so balanced, it’s delicious from beginning to end.
