detroiter (957), Euphoria, Minnesota, USA Feb 25, 2007 Twelfth Anniversary (XII) bottled 2005. Deep brown with reddish hues. An inch of rocky light tan foam. Good head retention and lacing. Sweet caramel malt and a hint of pine in the aroma. Sweet caramel malt and piney hop flavors are blended with a drier, earthy, woody, and even leathery, presence. Fullish body, moderate carbonation. Dry bitter leathery aftertaste lingers. Normally I like this, but with this beer find it oddly unpleasant. My initial reaction is that this is a little brother to Bigfoot with a long way to go to grow up. There are better barleywines.
oh6gdx (5680), Vaasa, Finland Aug 19, 2008 Bottled (XIV). Deep rubyish amber colour with mediumsized brown head. Aroma is strong hops and alcohol along with some fruityness, vanilla and breadyness. Flavour is mild roast, alcohol, fruity bitterness as well as some caramel. Wellbalanced and pleasant. vyvvy (1607), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA Aug 14, 2008 Pours deep brown / bronze with a rocky tan head. Thea aroma is deep and bready with caramel malts, nice rich mustiness and definite abv. Medium / thin body that is a bit slick and thinner than expected with a small amount of sharp carbonation. The flavor starts with earthy hops, dark malt, dry caramel, some woodiness and toffee. The finish has lots of woody / earthy hops and is rather harsh. A decent barleywine for a good price. michael-pollack (1360), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 10, 2008 12oz. Bottle (XV): Sweet aroma. Smells of hops, caramel, pine, toffee, and biscuit. Poured dark red/magenta in color with a small beige head that disappeared quickly. Clear. Slightly sparkling. Flavor is lightly sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of bitter hops, ripe dark fruits, pine, alcohol, chocolate, wood, and malts. Medium body. Slightly sticky, coating texture. Soft carbonation. Bitter, dry, alcohol-burn finish. waolsen (949), Littleton, Colorado, USA Aug 10, 2008 bottle. mahogony pour iwth thin head. citrus hops, old wood, malty aroma. earthy, rich full malty body, nice piney hops. light bitterness in finish. alcohol a bit too present. nice. Mes_and_Sim (4176), London, Greater London, England Aug 10, 2008 A Mes rate: Bottle at home with Diz. Almost black amber colour with a sumptuous tan head. Damn what an aroma. Massive chewy and earthy malt with loads of cheese and sugar and topped off with some brutal hoppage. Spicy and resinous, grassy and pungent. Bloody outstanding snout. Flavour is along similar lines. Superb and robust peated malt base. Good chewy caramel. Massive stinging hoppage that really wakes the palate up. Finishes with a full assault of all the complexity it can muster. This is a storming beer.
