First brewed in small batches annually to commemorate Uinta’s anniversary, this soul-warming brew is now available year-round. (Uinta’s anniversary is observed and noted by the change of the roman numeral on the label.) Uinta’s award winning barley wine has a dark amber hue with a rich malty character. Serious amounts of hops are used to balance its hardy alcohol content of over 10% ABV. Originating in England in the nineteenth century, barley wines are brewed with the same traditional ingredients as beer: water, malted barley, hops and yeast. There are no grapes or fruit used in the brewing process. The name “barley wine” refers to its alcohol content being similar to that of most wines, ranging from 8.5% to 14% ABV. Unlike most beers, barley wines age remarkably well. If you have the will power, set an Anniversary Barley Wine aside for a year or more.

Bottle from the XVII Anniversary release. A: The beer pours almost mahogany in color with a nice big off-white head and sticky lacing. S: A nice bit of citrus hop aroma, particularly grapefruit and grapefruit peel. There is a big floral note to it as well. Toffee, molasses, and brown sugar provide a nice sweetness to the beer. T: Plenty of brown sugar, molasses, and toffee sweetness to provide this beer with a nice base. The hops are a very nice accent to it all and there is a solid bitterness and perfumey hop flavor. M: Medium in body with a medium carbonation. Sort of creamy on the tongue. O: This was a pretty solid barleywine. Really easy to drink and a solid flavor profile.

UPDATED: JUN 14, 2005 2004: Golden-chestnut colour. Chocolatey, orangey aroma. Chocolatey, grapefruity, toasty, alcoholic flavour. This one is ready now, and quite pleasant.

2003: Bright reddish-brown colour. Chewy crystal malt aroma. Very earthy, bitter. Raw, with lots of heat. Maybe but it’s still young and needs the edge taken off the heat and bitterness. Ar 6 Ap 4 F 6 P 3 O13 = 3.2

Bottle. Clear amber with small off-white head. Aroma is malt, caramel, little toffee and a little dusty. Flavour is malt, caramel, toffee, dusty, hops, little sweet, little dry and medium bitter.

Bottle. Brown colour with a beige head. Aroma is roasted malt, hop, caramel. Flavour is roasted malt, hop, caramel, citrus, dried fruits, alcohol. Full body. Nice beer.

XII Ann. Great hoppy aroma backed by malt. Amber color, reddish heart, and virtually no head. Starts with a piny hop, moving to malty sweetness, finishing with sugar on the tongue, but the bitter continues. Goes good with chocolate.

(X -- 10th Anniversary BW, 10% ABV) Deep copper body with small off-white head. Aroma is sweet, caramel, toffee, alcohol. Taste is mild sweet, grapefruit, toffee, alcohol. FInish has strong alcohol warming. Medium-full body. FLavor not as developed as the aroma -- needs more sweetness.

Bottle shared by alexsdad06 under the name of 14th Anniversary. Poured hazy reddish brown color with medium frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with fair lacing. Complex dark fruity and roasted brown sugar aroma. Medium sweet dark fruity flavor with a medium to heavy sweet dark fruit finish of moderate duration. Medium body with a sticky texture. Good rich brew.

(Bottle, 2003 vintage) Pours a murky deep mahogany body with a moderate creamy beige head. Aroma of toasted bread, toffee, caramel, chocolate, and some citrus. Rich, chewy breadiness, malt, and spices with a bitter finish. Feel the warming sensation of the 10% abv.

XIV at GBBF 2008. Deep ruby brwon with a lasting off-white head. SNPA-like juicy citrus hop aroma, with some malt. Dry malty flavour with toffee and caramel, some citrus hop and a hint of alcohol. Very good, but felt like it probably would have been even better fresher.
