COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First brewed in small batches annually to commemorate Uinta’s anniversary, this soul-warming brew is now available year-round. (Uinta’s anniversary is observed and noted by the change of the roman numeral on the label.) Uinta’s award winning barley wine has a dark amber hue with a rich malty character. Serious amounts of hops are used to balance its hardy alcohol content of over 10% ABV. Originating in England in the nineteenth century, barley wines are brewed with the same traditional ingredients as beer: water, malted barley, hops and yeast. There are no grapes or fruit used in the brewing process. The name “barley wine” refers to its alcohol content being similar to that of most wines, ranging from 8.5% to 14% ABV. Unlike most beers, barley wines age remarkably well. If you have the will power, set an Anniversary Barley Wine aside for a year or more.

(Bottle, 2003 vintage) Pours a murky deep mahogany body with a moderate creamy beige head. Aroma of toasted bread, toffee, caramel, chocolate, and some citrus. Rich, chewy breadiness, malt, and spices with a bitter finish. Feel the warming sensation of the 10% abv.

XIV at GBBF 2008. Deep ruby brwon with a lasting off-white head. SNPA-like juicy citrus hop aroma, with some malt. Dry malty flavour with toffee and caramel, some citrus hop and a hint of alcohol. Very good, but felt like it probably would have been even better fresher.

355ml bottle @ ZZT III, courtesy of Martinus. XVII Anniversary. Dark red color, nice red glow coming through. Decent sized off-white head. Smell hops, lighly sweetish, hints of caramel and malts. Taste malts, sweetness, hops, some bitter. Very nice mouthfeel. Lovely beer.

12 oz. bottle, pours a dark mahogany with a small beige head. Rich aroma of brown sugar, toffee, dark fruits, berries, and caramel malts, with considerable sweetness. Flavour of sour cherries, balanced by dark sweet fruits, brown sugar and toffee. Finishes with burnt caramel, sour fruits and alcohol. The contrasts of sour and sweet don’t seem to have meshed as well as they could have. All in all, a well-made barley wine, but their Crooked Line Cockeyed Copper [Barley Wine] far surpasses this.

It’s 4:59 AM. I should be asleep, but I went to a party tonight and haven’t been home long. So, it’s way too early or late. It’s one of those. But either way, it’s rating #400. It’s also my first ever Utah beer. And this rating 400 comes from the generosity of footbalm, who kindly spread some "hometown" brew across the nation. I missed chances to try Uinta a time or three before, and nearly missed it again, until footbalm gloriously came through... for free! You seriously rock, Eric!

Light for a barleywine... reddish brown with medium head. Retention and lacing are good. Caramel toffee aroma with strong citrus and pine hops. (Damn, the birds just started chirping... I really need to go to bed.) Taste is big spicy hops. Vanilla, caramel finish. Very nice beer.

courtesy of oh6gdx - cloudy dark brown colour with a rubish hue; little persistent beige foam and a nice lace; aroma of prune and nuts with solid hops in the background; full-bodied and oily, respectable bitterness before a long aftertaste of pine, herbs and licorice - begs for meditation

Bottle at Leighton’s Euro Semi-Final tasting, thanks to jackl. It pours deep red/mahogany, with a thick beige head. The nose is pine, leaf, sweet caramel, varnish, citrus peel, mandarin and kumquat. The taste is pine, resin, leather, wood, varnish, spice, alcohol warmth, caramel, leaf, kumquat and some spice, with a dry, bitter finish. Lingering alcohol warmth. Medium body and moderate carbonation. A solid America barley wine.
