shp555 (1376), lilburn, Georgia, USA May 10, 2008 Pours a ruby color with a tan head. Aroma is aged malts, caramel, a hint of prune and a hint of aged hops. Flavor is malty, caramel, toast, and some bitter hops.
Gabe511 (1), Sicklerville, New Jersey, USA does not count Aug 27, 2008 This was a 12oz sample bottle i got from work. I’m a big fan of this style and this one was pretty good. The nose is of hops, dried fruits and candied sugars. A nice taste of the same with copper malts. The alcohol is well hidden too. Nothing beats an aged Old Horizontal but this one is enjoyable. kevin62 (240), New Jersey, USA Aug 26, 2008 This 12 oz botlle(15th anniversary) was dated 7-21-08,so it is pretty fresh, maybe I should have waited longer on this, but it was a free sample.Any way it poured a dark amber color with a large tan head.Aromas were of heavy hops, pine, molassas. The taste was more on the hopppy side with light molassas and fruit.Ok. Glouglouburp (1935), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 26, 2008 In short: Pleasant sugary malt backbone but lacking hops. Just an Ok sweet beer.
How: Bottle 12oz (XIV anniversary version), consumed when about 6 months old
The look: Clead dark-amber body topped by a very small head
In long: Sugary maltiness abound with brown sugar, sugar pie and others. Despite the its very sweet character the beer is not sticky or syrupy, just very sugary sweet. Fruity flavours limited to some berries. Gets more caramelized as it warms up. I can enjoy that type of maltiness if you throw in a top of hops with a strong bitterness. Not the case here, the little hops there was had as much bite as my granny, the poor woman needs to pass her Big-Macs through a blender.
cameljameson (1), , Utah, USA does not count Aug 25, 2008 great color not much head, nice clean hopsy smell, malty strog but not over powering great for utah beer lol eaglefan538 (2041), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Aug 24, 2008 Pour from bottle, full brownish-red color with a good initial off-white-ish head, retention only ok, but not terrible, lacing ok, not a standout after the first minutes. The aroma was caramel, brown sugar, molasses, fruits, faint pine. The flavor followed the aroma, a little too sticky for me, although there was a slight hop balance under it all. Not very alcoholic, but it was somewhat metallic/astringent in the aftertaste.
