COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First brewed in small batches annually to commemorate Uinta’s anniversary, this soul-warming brew is now available year-round. (Uinta’s anniversary is observed and noted by the change of the roman numeral on the label.) Uinta’s award winning barley wine has a dark amber hue with a rich malty character. Serious amounts of hops are used to balance its hardy alcohol content of over 10% ABV. Originating in England in the nineteenth century, barley wines are brewed with the same traditional ingredients as beer: water, malted barley, hops and yeast. There are no grapes or fruit used in the brewing process. The name “barley wine” refers to its alcohol content being similar to that of most wines, ranging from 8.5% to 14% ABV. Unlike most beers, barley wines age remarkably well. If you have the will power, set an Anniversary Barley Wine aside for a year or more.

Dark brown pour, thin head, not the biggest Barleywine fan, this is one was OK. Though it is 10.4 ABV, not overbearing, surprisingly smooth. Go Utah!

Poured into a wine glass. Fruity and toffee aroma. Taste of bread, caramel, herbs and alcohol. Maybe a little bit thin for the style and not big enough.

(Bottle). Lovely fresh scent of hops with aromas of sweet tropical fruits. Sweet taste of malt, slightly over-ripe tropical fruit, sweet caramel malt, raisins and alcohol. Much sweet sticky alcohol in the aftertaste. Well? Impressive beer, but how palatable is it really? In my mouth a little too much flavor of sweet toffee. But okay, 10,4 % ABV is not noticeable too much in the taste, and that it is impressive!

Pours clear dark brown. Nice lastning head. Nose is dried dark fruits, caramel malt and leather. Typical american barley wine taste: pines, burnt sugar and very bitter. Full body.

UPDATED: MAY 14, 2005 Rating #1 (7 4 7 4 15) Bottle of the 9th Anniversary vintage bottled in 2002 (9.8% abv). Dark as night brown color with a light brown head. Vinous, wood, cherry and dark fruits in the nose. A fine smooth flavor that hides the alcohol well. Malty, fruity and plenty of wood in the flavor. Rating #2 (6 4 6 3 15) tap of the 11th anniversary at the Toronado. A hazy brown color with a light brown head. Alcohol, cherry and chocolate nose. The flavor has some burnt malts, chocolate, mollasses and dark fruits. Rather thick and intense in flavor.

Good stuff, who’d have thought this would come out of Utah? Tasted similar to Arrogant Bastard. Big hop bite with a sweet, smooth aftertaste. The ABV left a nice glow in the stomach.

Bottle - X (Thanks to DarkElf at SD Barleywine Bash 7-24-04). Pours Garnet and clear with a small foamy head. Aroma is sweet dark malts with floral and citurs hops and alcohol evident. Flavor is sweet and spicy, lots of hop bitterness and alcohol bite - a bit unbalanced overall. Full, sticky body.
