COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First brewed in small batches annually to commemorate Uinta’s anniversary, this soul-warming brew is now available year-round. (Uinta’s anniversary is observed and noted by the change of the roman numeral on the label.) Uinta’s award winning barley wine has a dark amber hue with a rich malty character. Serious amounts of hops are used to balance its hardy alcohol content of over 10% ABV. Originating in England in the nineteenth century, barley wines are brewed with the same traditional ingredients as beer: water, malted barley, hops and yeast. There are no grapes or fruit used in the brewing process. The name “barley wine” refers to its alcohol content being similar to that of most wines, ranging from 8.5% to 14% ABV. Unlike most beers, barley wines age remarkably well. If you have the will power, set an Anniversary Barley Wine aside for a year or more.

UPDATED: MAY 14, 2005 Rating #1 (7 4 7 4 15) Bottle of the 9th Anniversary vintage bottled in 2002 (9.8% abv). Dark as night brown color with a light brown head. Vinous, wood, cherry and dark fruits in the nose. A fine smooth flavor that hides the alcohol well. Malty, fruity and plenty of wood in the flavor. Rating #2 (6 4 6 3 15) tap of the 11th anniversary at the Toronado. A hazy brown color with a light brown head. Alcohol, cherry and chocolate nose. The flavor has some burnt malts, chocolate, mollasses and dark fruits. Rather thick and intense in flavor.

Bottle via trade with IrishBoy. Aroma of sweet caramel and toffee with some mild pine and citrus hops. A hint of alcohol. Pours a pretty dark, rich ruby with white sticky lacing down the glass. Flavor was somewhat discombobulated. Roasted malt and some bitter hops but nothing comes together that well. Everything that should be present in a barleywine is there, but it just doesn’t come together that well. Medium to full bodied but finishes a tad on the watery side.

X!V Anniversary. Amber pour with nice off-white head. Has a hoppy nose, with sweet malty undertones. Somewhat roasty up front, with a hoppy bite. Good carbination, for this medium bodied ale. Finish is hoppy and warm from the alcohol.

Appearance: Pours a clear, reddish-brown body with a tiny, off-white head. Smell: Caramel malts with a handful of toasted breadcrusts and a pine resin hop scent. A bit of booze lurking in there as well. Taste: Sweetish caramel malts arrives with a bitter, resinous hop hit of pine. Slight cherry fruitiness underneath. As with the aroma, the abv is apparent. Tangy, bitter finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel. Drinkability: Not a top tier barleywine. I, for one, could use a heft of malt and body.

bottle - XIII. thanks to TBC... pours a deep red with a decent beige head. not an American BW style... much more in line with the English BWs... very malty. aromas of aged malts... medium body... somewhat creamy, big malts, dark fruits and a bit of alcohol is present. Not really into this one... I prefer a big hoppy BW. Not bad though for it’s style.

Tap at Barcade 2008 Version: Pours a deep brown with a ruby hue with a thin ring of head. Sweet aroma with detectable alcohol, candy malts and some tropical fruit notes come through as well. Slick texture, warming feel. Fairly sweet flavor upfront with candied peach and berries along with subtle toffee. Then it leads into an abrupt bittering hop character to balance. Not altogether cohesive, but decent.

About as average as a barley wine can get. Amber brown color without much head. Spotty head. Toffee and caramel aroma. Strong alcohol in the nose. Malty stuff. Lots of toffee and caramel in the taste as well. Some dark fruit. Not much really. Slightly bitter at the end. Lots of burning alcohol as it warms. Eh.

Bottle. Pours a deep dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is caramel, brown sugar, alcohol, and some pine. Flavor was quite hoppy more than i was expecting with caramel malts, brown sugar, subtle toffee, pine and some ripe fruit with a sticky texture and a bitter hoppy finish.
