rayg1 (408), Ft. Mill, South Carolina, USA Apr 18, 2008 A trade from Douglas, his "best local". Thanks buddy lets give this one a try! The beer opens with a nice hiss and pours out a dark brown with ruby highlights, a small tan head forms on top of the brew. Almost instantly I could pick up citrus smells with a touch of pine. However, the aroma isn’t all hops and in fact the malts make a decent showing to, pretty nice one to smell. Taste is very bold and pretty good. Hops smack the lips with grapefruit and heavy pine resin, however just the right amount of caramel sweetness in the malts comes through to balance it all out. The beer almost has a slight Earthy and wooden taste to it even though this was not barrel aged to my knowledge. Regardless this is an excellent barleywine. I wish I had one more to age for a bit as I could see this one improving with time.
Svesse (1811), Hässelby, Sweden Oct 5, 2008 (Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 27 Sep 2008. Labeld XV Anniversary Barley Wine) Dark ruby red with lasting pale brown head, leaving lots of lacing. Malty, hoppy nose with notes of pine needles, chocolate nad orange peel. Malty, hoppy taste with chocolate, blood oranges, orange peel, pine needles and resin. Long, hoppy finish. Rather sweet, but balanced by the hops. Medium to full body. Complex. Very tasty and quite brilliant. BMan1113VR (896), Los Angeles (and Dallas, TX), California, USA Oct 2, 2008 15th Anniversary, bottled 7/21/08. Pours with a hazy deep red body, and a small, off-white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is hoppy, tangy with lots of caramel, with some prunes and dark fruits. Taste is very malty, slightly nutty with a slight burnt astringency towards the end. Thick mouthfeel with sharpish bubbles. Might mellow a bit in 3 or 4 years, but the starting product isn’t really promising enough to warrant the wait. jsh12bama (227), Alabama, USA Oct 1, 2008 Pours ruby red with thick tan head.
