UPDATED: JUN 1, 2013 Poured from bottle to glass. Dark black with tan head. Rich malty coffee roasty smell. Soft smooth malt taste. Good carbonation without being overly fizzy. Nice creamy feeling with a slighty sweet finish. Boy this is good stuff!

Appearance: near black, (ruby highlights when held to the light) with two-fingers of creamy light tan head shrinking to a thick collar and leaving generous lace rings. Aroma: dark chocolate, cacao, coffee, pumpernickel, a hint of smoke. Taste: predominantly bitter dark chocolate, a bit of roast coffee beans, slightly burnt toast, mellow, earthy hops. Finish: smooth, clean, with lingering dark malts balancing against earthy hops. Notes: A written description cannot do this beer justice. Simply the best schwarzbier Iíve ever had, better than traditional German versions, better than any American attempt. Beautiful pour, attractive nose, delicious, balanced flavors, creamy-but-refreshingly-drinkable palate, and a sessionable 4% abv. Near perfect. Iím very sad that I only grabbed a single bottle, and will be on the lookout for more.

Best by 11JUL13 Black with a nice light tan quilt. Smells malty, some coffee, some soil, some leather - all components come together nicely. I like the nose. Robust flavor with leather, cocoa, dark chocolates, coffee (espresso tradiitional), a slight earthy character. well fucking done. Medium on full bodied with moderate, but prickly carb. This is a sincerely well done beer. Absolute delight for the style. Really recommend this.

Sometimes I buy a 6-pack of individual bottles I have never had before, and I sort them in order of darkness. I start with Lagers, and end with Stouts. This beer is quite the delicious exception.

Black with a tan head. Aromas of iced coffee, chocolate, and crisp, clean lager yeast. Lots of roasted barley flavors with coffee and a hint of smoke. Medium-bodied with a clean finish. The dark flavors donít compromise the crisp characters of a schwarzbier. Really well done.

Flat flavor (not carbonation), toasty, roasty flavor, coffee aroma, lagerish body with black color.

UPDATED: MAY 4, 2014 Pretty much black with a nice foamy tan head with longevity. Aroma is rich, dark roasted barley. Flavor is rich dark roasted barley as well but with enough balancing bitterness to not make this beer too sweet. Coffee and chocolate undertones. Cool on the palate and drinks more like an ale. Just good. No reason not to make this a goto front porch sitter. Its what shiner black tried to be. Even better its lower abv than light macros.
