Robust and smooth, this full-flavored lager is exceptionably drinkable and pitch black in color.

Bottle:   Nearly black, deep cola, thin sudsy off-white head, little lacing.   Somewhat of a dark mealy nose, slight lactose and stale coffee.   Roasty on the tongue, a bit of ash, smidgen of soy and fig, followed by a bit of old coffee that was doused with milk & sugar.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Smooth going down, lingering toasted biscuit and cold coffee, sweetened of course.   Less mealy and grainy than many other examples.   Rather nice.

Strong, smoky aroma has tones of licorice and charred wood. It pours a deep sable a whisker above black with a decent tan head. Flavor is woody and smoky, with hints of licorice and coffee. Texture is smooth and fizzy but body is average. Overall it’s so-so, but worth sampling.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a medium, long retained light beige head, with a bit of lacing, over a clear brown (SRM 30) body....nose is light coffee, hints of cocoa....taste is light coffee, light chocolate, finishing with a light dry bitterness....mouth feel light, carbonation adds a light foam. This meets the style quite well. It is malt forward, is minimally hopped, remains dry, and has a pleasant complexity. Rating is to its meeting the style, but this has all the making of a great session beer. BJCP 7/3/14/4/7

Pours dark brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is roasty...sweet...touch of coffee. Flavor follows suit...maybe a touch of dark chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium and the finish is roasty.

UPDATED: JUN 2, 2012 Draft at Taps Petaluma. Black with brown highlights and low tan foam. Waffle, mint, grass, and faint licorice aroma. Spare flavors of sweet herbs, roast, and crisp.. seltzer. Very clean and thin, just a mite astringent and acid. My palate is screaming for some toasty to bolster the roasty.

Bottle pours dark murky red/brown with a fizzy thin tan head. Scent is grassy and roasty. Taste roasted malt, chocolate and pine.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. There are notes coffee, chocolate, slight tartness/maybe from roasted malts. There is a subtle hop flavor in the finish. Nice easy drinking black beer.

The aroma is a nice malty coffee scent not very strong though. Pours almost a black with frothy tan head that diminishes fast leaving a little lacing. Not a lot of carbonation. Taste lots of coffee flavors some bitterness and sour on the tounge. Overall not bad but it is missing something. Not very full.

From a bottle poured a dark brown color with a small amount of head. Toasted malty flavor with a quick finish.

On tap, pours a cola brownish black, with medium beige head, tons of light brown watery lacing. Aromas/taste of roasty malts, toffee, sweet caramel, very minimal hops, smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Balanced very well. Not my style but a solid brew overall.
