3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 ChainGangGuy (4116) - Marietta, Georgia, USA - JAN 9, 2013
Appearance: Pours a dark amber-brown body with an inch-plus of yellowed foam up top.
Smell: Caramelized sugar in the nose, toasted breadcrusts, some fruitiness, whiskey barrels, a sliver of oxidation and alcoholic wafts leaving you with no doubt of a high ABV%.
Taste: Smooth caramel maltiness with some toastiness present. Medium-light sweetness. I thought the hops were surprisingly robust, giving up some citric kicks and sharp florals. Moderate bitterness. Solid barrel presence, with tastes of whiskey, toasted tannic oak, and charred barrel innards. Minor oxidative notes. Bittersweet at the finish with some dry alcohol-infused caramel.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Somewhat sticky mouthfeel.
Overall: One thumb up, above-average, but it failed to return my zeal, my zest for life. Maybe next time.

Bottle, shared with Parksy, Grippitis, and Ian. Tasted alongside Cigar City Warmer Winter Warmer. Tis was lighter in colour, but still had a lovely deep rued-orange hue. Dates, brown bread, brown sugar, dried apricots. Sticky, chewy, fantastic. Low hop presence, but this bottle has almost 2 years of age on it. Man I love a good barley wine.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20 timfoolery (882) - California, USA - NOV 30, 2012
Bottle from DBS. I get hoppy, American barley wine from the aroma. Flavor is lacking bourbon character and has a bitter hop character after the age, but does give a little malt backbone. Still, that bitterness ruins the palate too. Not a great beer, but some positive parts.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a moderate off-white head. Nose has some alcohol notes to it. Taste is very interesting, with some sweeter notes in there and some drier notes to finish the "wine" style.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 theSlipperyPen (221) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - NOV 28, 2012
A deep mahogany pour with amber edges and ruby highlights under an off-white head which holds persistently as a fine lacing. The nose is of rich malts, creamy vanilla and both fresh and candied oranges. It’s drier in the mouth than the nose would have one expect. The malts are soft and work well to balance the bitter hops. The bourbon barrel aging has given this a vanilla edge that holds everything together. Finishes like a ruby marmalade, getting warmer as it goes. Lovely stuff.
