Detour blazes the trail for fresh and bold Double IPAs. Four varieties of hops combine to step up the flavor profile. A hoppy adventure that finishes dry. Big in alcohol and character. Venture to pair with other spirited flavors such as those found in spicy ethnic foods.

Pint on tap at Keystone in Hyde Park. Clear orange / amber color. Half-finger off-white head, good thin bit retains. Good lace. Nice assertive bitter hoppy nose. Awesome piney, resiny, zesty sweetness. Light bit of alcohol. Bigger body, light smooth carbonation. More dry texture, though a bit of viscosity. Good big biscuity caramel malt balance to it, though still bitter and assertive and not sweet at the same time. Tasty and drinkable DIPA.

Fruity but tons of bready malt on the nose. A nice thin line of head. A solid double slap to the face of hops. Highly carbonated. I like it, I think as it warms the tastes will improve. The alcohol pulls thru just a hare too much.

Big bottle uncorked, cloudy orange brown ice tea like pour with heavy cream head that sticks to the glass, smells or caramel malt syrup, thick spicy taste, herbs, pine hop with a spicey bitter aftertaste, almost some lingering cinnamon, Uinta does not disappoint

Difficult to ignore this Uinta Brewing Co. I’ve recently encountered in battle. Crooked Line is a spicy, dry, and hoppy treat! Very nice looking russet color, and I believe there is some rye in there--I swear there is rye! I had no choice put to right this in the exceptional category.

750 ml bottle. Pours a murky bronze color with a big clumpy off-white head that has good retention and abundant lacing. Aroma of caramel, sweat and pine. Taste is bitter resins followed by sweet caramel, toffee and a touch of chemically hot alcohol. The palate is full and viscous with lively carbonation. Finishes dry, medium in duration, with sweet tastes lingering. Overall: I should have paid attention to the bottling date, this stuff is 6 month old. I’ll look for a fresh bottle to re-rate.

Big alcohol is hidden pretty well up front; slow burn in the back of the throat over time. Sweet malt base with lots of caramel and toasted bread. Hops are grassy, piney and grapefruity. Moderate, balanced bitterness. Earthy and herbal aromas. Solid brew.

Persimmon colored body was clear and lively, with a three finger thick head. Extra props for the classy caged and corked presentation, with a little informative cardboard foldout tied around the neck. The aroma was rich with pine straw and grapefruit smells from the hops. The taste was citric and quite bitter. There was not a whole lot of malt backbone here, and the sweetness was mostly comprised of simple sugars. Pretty sticky on the palette, and a long aftertaste with a pepper like spiciness. Not a beer to make me go wow, but a solid detour indeed.

UPDATED: JAN 5, 2013 Pours a beautiful golden amberwith a decent white head and some lacing. Has a bold hop smell but not over the top. The first sip is surprisingly smooth for a double but is just right for a 9.5. A little bit of the bitter hops perfectly balanced with honey and citrus. Really a great beer with perfect blending of hops.

Nice presentation in the corked champagne bottle with wire cage. Appearance reminds me of clover honey, translucent orange gold and high viscosity. Fluffy, impermanent off-white head of small creamy bubbles. Sticky lacing. Surprisingly mild, sweet aroma; not as hop-forward as I would have expected. Crazy smooth. How is a double IPA this balanced? Especially with four varieties of hops. Maybe I have burned off my taste buds with hops. Not boozy or syrupy, although I am feeling its effects halfway through. Really decent stuff. A classic IPA with twice the girth.
