A very nice, smooth black. Pours very thick black with a beautiful brown head. Smells of coffee, chocolate and licorice. Taste has lots of coffee and licorice, with a sweet finish. For 13%, not too boozy. Paired with fig pizza, some of the booze comes out, with a bit more milkiness.

Super carbonated. Big head the color of chocolate milk. Jet black body. Licorice, toffee, chocolate syrup. Medium heavy body feel (stoutish). Strong licorice flavor, very smokey, woody, slightly oaky, harsh, boozy. Sugar, sweet, chocolate, coffee bean. Complex.

750 ml corked and caged bottle courtesy of and shared with beastmaster. Pours pitch black with a massive creamy dark brown head. Aroma of sweet dark fruits, smokey roast, anise/black licorice, some strong chocolate coming through, char maybe from barrels. Smells pretty rich. Flavor is sweet and smokey molasses, chocolate, oak, booze, raisins. Medium plus plus body, medium to low carbonation, and very smooth. Warming. Very sticky here. Sort of like smoked chocolate covered licorice sticks. Jury is still out but a nice dessert in small quantities. Drinkability on the low side but overall nice.

Aroma is mostly chocolate, licorice and oak. Pours dark brown, tan head that holds for some time. Taste chocolate, coffe, oak, alcohol. Itís a bit too alcohol forward .. well at 13.2%, and Iím sure itís actually more, you canít really have that against it. Overall very solid quad.

Reviewed from notes and perhaps the best brew Iíve had by date from this company. The night I had this, I poured this into a pint glass and a snifter. The appearance was a pure jet black color with a one finger white foamy head in both glasses. The lacing was the same in both glasses as it was fairly clingy and thick. The smell was a roasted barley and coffee that combines with a black licorice that ends up allowing a decent roasted chocolate coming about to balance it all out. Wow, what a nice complex smell to this. The taste was bitter, roasty and sweet at different times and ends up allowing these super nice qualities to come back in the aftertaste. There is a finish and its somewhat dry and sweet. On the palate, this one is not sessionable by any means. It sits heavy on the body with a decent carbonation running about my mouth and tongue. Overall, American Black Ale, wow, this is a very well done beer for its style and for me.

750mL bottles on 3/29/13. Beautiful pour, reminiscent of Expedition. Palate is right on par as well. Warming alcohol, but well hidden, and smooth as frack. Nice black licorice, moderately fruity, burnt flavor. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
