Corked and caged bottle shared with a friend. Pours very dark brown to the point where it almost appears black until it is held to the light, topped by a thin khaki head. The nose is chocolatey with some bread character as well. The flavor is very slick and smooth chocolate, rye bread, toffee, and pizza crust. In no way did it feel like 13% in the mouth, if I hadn’t known I would’ve guessed it to be 6%. Super smooth and quaff-able despite the dangerous abv.

750 ml bottle. Pours black with a beautiful dark tan head. You get coffee, sweet malt, star anise, and hint of chocolate on the nose. Tastes of chocolate, roasted malts, raisins, plums, hops, and a little coffee and some sweet citrus. Nice and complex with a medium body. It looks and smells like a stout, but drinks like a porter. Excellent brew. Definitely best I’ve had from Uinta.

Sweet, chocolate, dark caramel, dark fruit malty aroma. Malty flavor: Sweet, coffee, black licorice, dark caramel, raisin. Nice character from the barrel; prominent, but not too much. Some pepper spiciness. Drier finish. Nice creamy mouthfeel.

Any description of this beer would come painfully short of the overall quality of this Quad Black Ale. Just go get one, and see exactly why it’s loved by many.

Purchased earlier today from Cigarette City. $10.99 for the 750 mL bottle. To short-stemmed white wine glass, it pours a mahogany-tinted taupe with which a webby Tuscan beige head 1½ fingers in length stood. Aromas of young-matured port wine, black currant purée, wild black cherries, burnt spelt pie crusts, grill char, 70% dark chocolate, wood pulp, candied walnuts, black licorice candies, vanilla beans, bourbon oak, pipe tobacco, and London ale yeast. Tastes the same with the addition of dried lavender, white sage/herbal hops, damp newspaper, and roasted soy beans. Abrasive, but in a fittingly good way. At 13.2% abv, you’d think this would be your last beer, but the content is hidden so ridiculously well, that I could probably sip one other bottle of this before genuinely feeling its effects. Full-bodied, but you could’ve guessed that.

This beer pours a deep black color with a thick, creamy brownish/tan head. Aroma is of oak, coffee and chocolate. Mouth feel is thick and creamy. Taste is amazing. Notes of molasses, chocolate, coffee, dark fruit and oak. Pour then let sit for 10 minutes to warm a little. Flavors are out of control. Amazing beer. Would LOVE to have this on tap.

On tap at at Oscar’s Alehouse in Eldersburg, MD. Opaque, near black with a brown head and excellent lacing. Aroma of licorice, molasses, roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruit, alcohol and oak. Taste of licorice, alcohol burn, chocolate, roasted malt, molasses, dark fruit, tobacco and charred wood. Medium/full body and medium carbonation. Complex and excellent, but the alcohol is all too obvious. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle (bottled 09/2013). Pours black with a dark beige head. Black licorice dominates the aroma, dark chocolate and some alcohol present. Medium-full bodied. Creamy, followed by a significant bitterness and light chalkiness.
