COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Golden Spike Hefeweizen is a traditional, American Style, unfiltered wheat beer. Cloudy and golden-orange in appearance, Golden Spike Hefeweizen is smooth, creamy and often served with a slice of lemon. Golden Spike Hefeweizen was named in honor of the celebrated historic completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the United States. In May 1869 a ceremonial “golden spike” was used at the juncture of two facing locomotives--the Union Pacific No. 119 and Central Pacific No. 60 (better known as the Jupiter). Each locomotive represented the railroad lines laid from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The copper-alloyed gold spike was tapped into a pre-drilled hole and replaced by an ordinary spike soon afterwards. Each of the four sides of the golden spike was engraved, including one inscription that said, “May God continue the unity of our Country, as this Railroad united the two great Oceans of the world.” Interestingly, these particular railroad lines wouldn’t be completed until years later when bridges were completed over various rivers in the east. A coast-to-coast link was completed in 1870 with the extension of the Kansas Pacific Railway. There is as much complexity to history as there is to our beer. Golden Spike Hefeweizen--where yeast meets west.

Bottle:   Hazy straw, dark, moderate white foamy head, spotty lacing.   Wheaty aroma, but no real bubblegum or banana.   Strong wheatiness on the tongue, seems to be fairly hefty but fairly simple.   Light sweetness on the backside.   Strong wheatiness lingers.   As a standard Wheat Ale, this would be great.   But as a German Hefe its lacking the banana and bubble gum.   Feels fairly hefty tho, which is nice.   Simple, but definitely wheaty but not quite up to being a German style.

Clove/banana aroma--nice balance between the two. Doughy malt, and maybe some sulfur-ish aroma. Similar yeasty flavor, with some sweet and light dough/bread.

On tap at Oscar’s near Zion. Pours a copper color, with a frothy white head, and lots of lacing. Some citrus aromas, slight honey and wheat. Flavor has some wheat, citrus, banana and clove. Drinkable.

Bottled 4.26.12. Pours hazy dark copper with a thin, soapy head. Aromas of tart berry, yeast, and caramel. The flavor is sugar cane and red berry. Flat, with low carbonation. Bah. [1133]

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle with bottled on date April 26, 2012 obtained through trade with JStax poured into a weizen glass. Pours hazy golden with small fizzy white head that dissapates very quickly. No lacing, medium body, low carbonation, and nice light clove aroma. Taste is estery banana, then an off astrigent lemon, and grainy wheat. One of the worst tasting hefeweizens I have had.

Bottled. Golden clearish pour. Not much head. Some esters and cloves but kinda weak sauce overall.

A bodega in a six-pack: Pours a clear orange with a small white head. Aroma is light banana and clove. Taste is slightly sour and pretty light. It isn’t exactly watery, but it is hardly substantial. It ain’t bad and works fine as a session methinks.

Cloudy gold/brown with a thin white head. Aroma is wheat, yeast. Taste is pretty much the same, not really interesting.
