Golden Spike Hefeweizen is a traditional, American Style, unfiltered wheat beer. Cloudy and golden-orange in appearance, Golden Spike Hefeweizen is smooth, creamy and often served with a slice of lemon. Golden Spike Hefeweizen was named in honor of the celebrated historic completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the United States. In May 1869 a ceremonial “golden spike” was used at the juncture of two facing locomotives--the Union Pacific No. 119 and Central Pacific No. 60 (better known as the Jupiter). Each locomotive represented the railroad lines laid from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The copper-alloyed gold spike was tapped into a pre-drilled hole and replaced by an ordinary spike soon afterwards. Each of the four sides of the golden spike was engraved, including one inscription that said, “May God continue the unity of our Country, as this Railroad united the two great Oceans of the world.” Interestingly, these particular railroad lines wouldn’t be completed until years later when bridges were completed over various rivers in the east. A coast-to-coast link was completed in 1870 with the extension of the Kansas Pacific Railway. There is as much complexity to history as there is to our beer. Bottle courtesy of SUUUUUUUUPER DAVE. I think this is my first Utah rating. Might not be. Just checked and it is in fact my second. Lemony yellow body with cloudy notes, and a small, compact off white head. Settles fairly quickly, leaves no lace. Fore is bland, watery citrus, something that resembles wheat, and not much else. Pretty hard to get anything from this puppy. A 5 here might be generous, but you know, it is the Holidays. Unfortunately the flavor is just as bland and forgettable as the aroma. Light bodied, watery finish. High carbonation. Blech.

Bottle at home in CT. Pours Lilly hazy gold with a large, frothy off-white head. The aroma holds very mellow wheat and cereal, with hints of lemon zest. Light sweet flavor with further relaxed wheat, cereal, some lightly tangy lemon nuance, biscuits, dough. Light in body with average carbonation. Reasonably well balanced in the finish, if a bit bland. Quite drinkable but certainly pretty basic.

Appearance: cloudy gold, with a short-lived fizzy white head. Aroma: banana, some citrus, creamy wheat, light funk. Taste: slightly skunky, a bit spicy, with phenolic, yeasty clove notes over banana, cracked wheat, and a hint of orange. finish: lasting bit of yeasty spice, but the unpleasant skunky note rises a bit at the end. Notes: Another lackluster Uinta brew, but better than others. I think I probably won’t buy anything from them ever again, with the exception of their outstanding Baba black lager.

Tap pour. Swampy gold in glass. Potent aroma of rotting bananas and musky socks. Is the tap off? I hope so. Uninviting. Taste is similarly strange. I like bananas. This tastes like bananas. And I don’t like this. What went wrong?

Bottle at home. Pours lightly hazy orange with a small, frothy white head, short retention with spare lacing. Aroma is earthy and spicy wheat malt, light hops and citrus notes, faint cooked banana/plantains with a light clove character. Flavor is malt and yeast ester dominant with light spicy hops and mild bitterness, and a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

On tap at Sheraton in SLC. Medium hazy yellow, decent head. Aroma was grainy (got the lemon out quick). Flavor was essentially wheat malt, with hint of lemon and orange, and the faintest note of clove. Sort of in the same vein as the Pyramid here. Not bad, but definitely a lawnmower style brew.

Orange brown pour some white head. Aroma of stank sourdough bread. Tastes sweet orange planty sour barley flavor. Mild carbonation is the best thing this one has going since it keeps the stank from getting to much up into your face.
