Bottle to snifter (shared with the Mrs.). Looks good; a fairly opaque brown with off-white lacing. Smells semi-sweet, doughy, and malty. Tastes like it smells with a good mouthfeel. A good example of the style.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
12oz bottle, shared. Best by 6/21/13. Clear dark brown color. Almost black. One-finger khaki-colored head. Leaves good row of lace. Toasted malt, light chocolate, robust flavor. Light / medium body, good smooth carbonation, dry finish. Nice bitter sweet taste. Solid black lager, I’d say. Would recommend to those looking for this style.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
This is a light crisp lager that drinks like a stout. Very dark, deep flavors, a color that is black as midnight, and a taste that you’ve only had in heavy stouts, but it will not fill you up like one. On the expensive side, but worth a try!

Bought it because it has a sheep on the bottle. We kiwis need to live up to our stereotypes. Quite a soft beer with little carbonation. Definitely a dark beer. Little light up front but does linger on the palate.

I thought this was a tremendous black lager. Very dark and had an aroma of slight smoke and a little but of chocolate. Taste was smooth and drinkable with little smoke flavor and relatively thin compared to its appearance.

3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle. Pours a clear dark brown body with a nice small frothy beige head that left a bit of lacing. The nose is really wonderful, it’s roasty, chocolaty, laced with licorice, and not overly sweet smelling. The flavor is a bit of a letdown unfortunately. It’s a little too grainy and husky, lacking in smoothness and the qualities you should get from lagering. The finish is a little too rough. There’s some roast and burnt malt, and not a whole lot of licorice. Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation, lingering light rubbery note on the finish. Could be worse, but not something that I’d buy a second time.
