3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
I’ve seen this on the shelves here for quite awhile now, and finally picked some up last week. 12oz bottle poured into a stemmed lager glass.
Pours a deep black, like a stout. Small beige head on top that dissipates very quickly. Aroma of hot chocolate, dry husky grains, graham crackers. Easy subtle feel. Though this beer looks heavy, it is very light on the palate. Almost too easy to drink this one.
Heavy-hitting roasted chocolate flavors present. Sweet mellow flavors meld with a dry cracker finish. Cereal grains on the back end. This little beer packs on the flavor. This is organic too? Nice. A nice little beer here. This is a style that is underrated in my mind, and one I need to revisit more and more. Cool label art to boot.

3.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Nice beer. Deviates slightly from the style. No real hint of aroma. Very dark brew with a tan head. Medium weight with strong carbonation. Nice flavor of roasted and hoppy, almost like a black IPA and schwarzbier blended.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Very dark brown brew with a 2 finger head of off white foam sitting atop.
Bitter roasted malt in the smell with string hints of smoke. The bitter could be some hop character as well, I suppose.
Roasted malt, bitter hops, definite flavours of smoke that compliment. There’s some real harmony going on with this black lager.
It has a creamy mouthfeel.
Very good brew!

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pleasing aroma, chocolate syrup and some coffee notes. Very dark but not quite opaque in the glass, tinting red/purple in the light. Decent sized foamy head. Flavor somewhat empty, dry cocoa, mild coffee, dry finish - all somewhat typical of schwarzbier but the finish just runs a tad thin. I feel like there’s an illusion of smokiness in here, possibly due to a touch of roasted malt.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
A nearly black lager with a creamy beige head escaped the 12 oz bottle and rested in my glass. The aroma was mostly charred chocolate with maybe a hint of coffee. The beer was lighter than expected, both in feel and flavor. Palate seemed one dimensional with a short very slightly bitter finish. Good, but not great.

Pretty blah and not very good honestly. As a black lager goes, this one is pretty lacking.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: DEC 31, 2014 12 oz. bottle from Whole Foods. Nose of faint toast and yeast. Flavors of roasted coffee, smoke and cocoa. Slight malt influence. Bitter, yet mouth feel remains light and slightly watery with good carbonation. Dry, not sweet. For a light beer, I find this to be tasty and drinkable.
