3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 putdatinurpipe (5) - - JAN 12, 2013This is a light crisp lager that drinks like a stout. Very dark, deep flavors, a color that is black as midnight, and a taste that you’ve only had in heavy stouts, but it will not fill you up like one. On the expensive side, but worth a try!

Bottle. Pours dark brown with quickly settling white head. Aroma is rasted, mildly burnt, with a malty bread background. Flavor is malty, mildly roasted up front with a caramel/toffee finish. Moderate carbonation, light body, and crisp texture. An interesting dark lager, first I’ve reviewed of this style. Appreciate this beer a lot more than when I first tried it several years ago.

Draft sample at Wigwam beer fest. Very tasty schwarzbier that was actually refreshing on a warm day in Phoenix. Nice roasty notes but it maintained a lighter mouthfeel too. Very sessionable at 4BV too. I always appreciate well made lager.

355 ml bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours dark wooden brown, almost black, with a rather small frothy brownish beige head that quickly dissipates while leaving some lacing on the glass. Smell is slightly sweet, tiny sour and malty with dark bread, bread spices, lemon zest, overripe mango, cereal, roasted malts, liquorice root, burnt cookies and hints of lemon essence and laundry detergent. Taste is tiny sweet, bitter and malty with dark bread, lemon zest, cereal, roasted malts, biscuits, liquorice root, caraway, black tea, charred wood and hints of caramel. Mouthfeel is round, tiny astringent and medium bodied. Finish is bitter with dark bread, roasted malts, liquorice root, lemon zest, wood and burnt cookies. nicely drinkable.

Bottle share from Jim thanks! Pours a clear black brown with a slight head. Not much in the scent department but I do get smoke and chocolate malts. Taste is unexpectedly refreshing... Smokey and light chocolate malts. Like a lite porter.

On draught at Copper Creek - Salt Lake. Intense roasted aromas. Pours an opaque black color with thick off-white head. Medium body. Creamy mouthfeel. Dark malt flavor balance. Non-harsh roasted malt flavors. Ok.

5/1/13. On tap at Bad Habitz in Valdosta. Schwarzbier? Ok... listed at bar as black IPA. I hate bars. Deep brown pour with a nice khaki head that laces. Mild chocolate and roast in the aroma with some citrus and bitter kick. Rich bitter hop kick with some roast and chocolate/coffee. Definitely approaching brown IPA category (regardless of yeast). Not bad.

Tap. Pours a weak black with a flavor to match. It had a bit of roasted malt flavor, but it just tasted thin. Flavors that work well in an imperial stout don’t work in a watery beer like this.

So, i avoided this one like the plague for a while just because of the word "lager"..Until last night..finally grabbed one in a mixed sixer..very glad i did. Very nice roasted malt character especially for a 4% beer..nice hops in the background..no lager here. All in all i could drink this regularly. Nice offering!

Wow. Bottle from Ty. Black pour with medium lingering head. Nose is coffee and sweetness with a bit of smoke. Body is smooth and mellow. Coffee and chocolate in there with just a mild lingering bitterness to remind you that those Utah people are Crazy.
