European tradition meets western modernity with Monkshine, an approachable adaptation of the classic style brewed in Belgian monasteries. Rejoice, fellow admirers of Belgian ales, for there is Four+ Monkshine.

Crushed with Jakebra. Woo! Poopy bananas, hay, sour malt on the nose. Not very good in the flavor, though it is a slight improvement. Not a good beer.

12oz bottle thanks to Douglas88. Pours cloudy orange with a medium off white head, decent retention. Aromas of pale crystal malts, citrus, lemon, orange peel and some yeast. Flavors are sweet malts and yeast up front, with a decent hop presence in the finish. Thanks again Douglas!

Disgusting. I must admit I was warned by one of the clerks at the beer store. I thought, how bad can it be. It’s bad. And, as I noticed right before opening it, it was bottled over 6 months ago. Nose begins with a bit of apple and pear and a very dry yeast, but gets gross pretty quickly. Taste is terrible from start to finish. Not very drinkable. I like heemer’s comment, it is similar to drinking sweat, only sweat tastes better.

Bottle from Toal Wine & More in Cherry Hill. Hazy straw pour supporting a Medium rocky white head. Aroma of mildly sour apples and yeast. Pretty straightforward Belgian style pale profile with yeast and malt playing off one another. Not much in the way of hops. Thin but not overly thin texture and a long, mildly sour finish. Not a special brew by any means but still reasonably refreshing and worth a try.

Hazy dark gold orange colored body with thin white scum of a head on top. The aroma has some funky, nasty old library books. There is also some pear and cinnamon behind that, but the book funk dominates. The taste is like liquid wet dog with some old leather notes. There is a strong salty component. There is a little bit of pear and some cinnamon spice in the finish. It’s like drinking sweat.
