Ober (214), Best, Netherlands Jul 10, 2008 A dark brown colored beer, with a nice foamy beige head. The aroma of roasted malts, with dark fruits and some alcohol. The taste of chocolate with dark cherries, a nice combination. There are also raisins. It’s mild sweet with nice bitter tones. A good beer. Lubiere (3146), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Jun 24, 2008 A deep dark brown ale with a thick lacing frothy light moka head. Aroma of sweet caramel, prunes, licorice cinnamon and candy cane. In mouth, a very nice restrained sweetness, with light wooden notes, a bit of licorice, plums, and nice alcohol in finish. Very nice and balanced for its strength! Bieropholie import, BB 13/11/11. Alldaydrinker (449), Norwood, Massachusetts, USA Jun 19, 2008 Pours a rich dark brown murky color with a medium off white foamy head. Lots of suspended particulates. Nose is vibrant with apples, grapes, caramel, figs and tartness. Initial taste of grape, dark fruit, caramel mainly displayed. Pear and apples hint through. Mid palate displays some toasted malts and spices. Finishing with tangy hop balance, caramel, and grapes. Average palate duration. Light to medium body. Good head retention and excellent lacing. Lightly warming. Well balanced, flavor is less complex than expected but very drinkable. afireinside96 (341), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 7, 2008 330ml bottle served in a trappist glass. Pours a very deep brown with a thin capping of tan foam. Smells of figs, raisins, brown sugar, and dough, sort of like an amped up dunkel. Flavor has a lot of caramel, some dark fruit, and toast. The finish is a bit sweet for the style but some yeasty spiciness mellows it out some. The alcohol creates a lot of warmth from the tongue all the way down to the stomach . Better than I expected and a fair interpretation of the style. BlackForestCO (478), Fort Collins and Black Forest, Colorado, USA May 31, 2008 Bottle shared by Crosling, thanks Nick. This was the surprise of the night. Poured a murky chestnut brown color with a thin off-white head that left some decent lacing. Aroma of Belgian candi sugar, light biscuit, dark fruit (plum and fig, light apple), and a bit of yeast. Lightly sweet malt entry with some candi sugar that isn’t overpoweringly sweet and some light caramel leads into a lightly tart fruitiness that includes plum, fig, and light apple with some yeast and grape on the finish. Nice carbonation and moderate dryness. I am not real big on Belgian Strongs, but this one kicked ass.
