UPDATED: JUN 5, 2013
75 cl bottle. 2007 vintage.
Seems to be ok, no contamination detected. Sourish fruits, dark berries, yeast and spices on the nose. Same thing on the flavor with toffee and brown sugar also. Quite nice and nicely aged.
Maybe a 4.0 rating for this vintage bottle.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Malziger, weinartiger Geruch, Trauben. Süßer Start ins Geschehen. Süßmalzige Mitte, Schokolade, weinartig, kaum Alkohol. Abgang dichtmalzig, schwer und süß. Überraschend liquide, könnte aber noch komplexer sein. Ansonsten recht gut.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle: Cloudy, amber coloured, small off-white foamy layer, robust sweet-malty to toasty nose, caramelly and nutty aromas included, fruits and alcohol underneath; solid sweet flavour, some yeasty bitterness detectable, full bodied and a bit fizzy; lingering yeasty bitter and sweet malty finish, some warming alcohol in the aftertaste. Surely good, but not exciting…

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Nice dark amber color, clear with just the minimal head on top after a little bit. Some alcoholic aroma, kind of expected from a 10º belgian strong ale, remembering distilled spirits, maybe herbs and grass too. Light sweet and bitterness, mixed perfectly. Soft carbonation but at the first impression looks more than it really is, medium to full body with a clear bitter finish. Overall an excellent beer, really well balanced and enjoyable at any time.

UPDATED: JUN 5, 2013 75 cl bottle @ home, BBE 24.02.2012
Aroma is sweetish with orange peel. some toffee typical to aged belgian ales and brown sugar. Flavour has raisins, some orange peel and brown sugar. Finishes with distant vinegar, cardboard and moldy cellar notes. Also some warming alcohol in the aftertaste. The BBE date is quite exact; I have a feeling that this wouldn’t have improved with any more aging.
75 cl bottle vintage 2007? @ Timo A
Still sweet and lots of raisins. Well, it seems that I was wrong with the aging – if you do it in the right conditions. Harsh score estimate: 3.7.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Very dark unclear burgundy, more brown high up in the glass, thick beige head.
The nose is mostly sweet and roasted (almost to the point of being smoky), red fruits and some alcohol.
The taste very much delivers on the nose’s promise, it’s a pleasant full and roasted taste with a solid dose of sugars but never cloying; the alcohol is well hidden yet there is a warming glow (after all this is 10%), raisins, dark chocolate. All of this is balanced by an almost scotch ale like touch, slightly bitter.
The aftertaste is rather smooth, subtly roasted, still quite sweet, no lingering alcohol, again a little vegetable bitterness reminding me of a scotch.
Overall a quite complex and evolving taste; Ecaussines’ strongest is by far its most convicing brew and much, much more interesting than the ultrablonde or ultra ambrée.
