Pours a rich dark copper amber colour with medium off white head which lingers throughout. Quite heavy sediment in the glass but that is most likely due to me not letting the bottle settle for long after getting it home. Aroma has a lot going on, picking up licorice, strong malt presence, chocolate, coffee and caramelised dark fruits also a note of copper. Taste is bitter sweet with long dry yet tart finish. Complex and a noticable alcohol warming presence.

A dark brown coloured beer with reddish tints and a frothy and lasting off white head. A surprisingly mild aroma, but all the elements of a typical Belgian strong ale, vanilla spice, smoke, woody roasted malt, nutty and dark caramel, then ripe forest fruits. A medium mouthfeel. A smooth, slightly bitter sweet taste, the roasted malt elements, nutty, caramel, woody, smoke and vanilla dominate, but there is a slightly tart fruit flavour in the background that adds a light zestiness to the taste, cutting through the sweetness giving the finish a dangerously drinkable freshness.

Bottle . Pours dark brown, with a red glow. Small to good white head . Smell is bitter, tiny bit of coffee aspect, earthy , some hidden sweetness . Taste is bitter, some coffee, bit earth . caramel . Surprisingly sweet . Very soft carbo , light as well . Good, but less good than the other beers in the series even though higher ratings here ...

Ecaussinnes’ second beer, a potent ’massieve ale’ with a deep dark brown colour and medium thick, light beige head. Chocolatey and caramelly aroma, walnuts, candied fruits, raisins, brown bread, yeasty notes, floral hops; fluffy, mouth-filling maltiness, deep dark fruity sweetness, caramelly and chocolatey, slightly bittering in the end with indeed a kind of Scotch-like effect, and the expected warming alcohol. Complex and well-made, I really enjoyed this.

750ml, BB2011 (shared by FatPhil, thanks). Clear deep brown color. Tiny to almost no head, but that’s ok. Raisins, sweet, faint peppermint and cake in aroma. Raisins, woody, mint chocolate cake in taste. Some spicy aspects too. So fluffy and uplifting. No signs of alcohol. Fantastic brew!

BOTTLE 33CL. Look: clear ruby red with big east flakes, beige medium head. Aroma: rich dried fruit, cranberries, raisins, a bit of alcohol make it feel like a fruity liquor or a desert wine, brown sugar. Taste: very sweet, dried fruit, caramel malt, light spicy bitterness, no alcohol, medium body. By the time you finish the bottle, it starts to feel a bit cloying.

Net zoals de blonde en de amber een bier met een uitgesproken, lekkere smaak
