10 % of alcohol, a light Scotch-aftertaste, a nice body coming from the 4 different kinds of malt (one pale, two caramelised and one torrified malt).

Pours dark brown and murky with an audible fizziness. Rich smell of milk chocolate, bread, malty cereals and lots of things that are great to eat. Thick palate too and good balance sweet/bitter. Quite luxurious really.

Bottle . Pours dark brown, with a red glow. Small to good white head . Smell is bitter, tiny bit of coffee aspect, earthy , some hidden sweetness . Taste is bitter, some coffee, bit earth . caramel . Surprisingly sweet . Very soft carbo , light as well . Good, but less good than the other beers in the series even though higher ratings here ...

Ecaussinnes’ second beer, a potent ’massieve ale’ with a deep dark brown colour and medium thick, light beige head. Chocolatey and caramelly aroma, walnuts, candied fruits, raisins, brown bread, yeasty notes, floral hops; fluffy, mouth-filling maltiness, deep dark fruity sweetness, caramelly and chocolatey, slightly bittering in the end with indeed a kind of Scotch-like effect, and the expected warming alcohol. Complex and well-made, I really enjoyed this.

750ml, BB2011 (shared by FatPhil, thanks). Clear deep brown color. Tiny to almost no head, but that’s ok. Raisins, sweet, faint peppermint and cake in aroma. Raisins, woody, mint chocolate cake in taste. Some spicy aspects too. So fluffy and uplifting. No signs of alcohol. Fantastic brew!

BOTTLE 33CL. Look: clear ruby red with big east flakes, beige medium head. Aroma: rich dried fruit, cranberries, raisins, a bit of alcohol make it feel like a fruity liquor or a desert wine, brown sugar. Taste: very sweet, dried fruit, caramel malt, light spicy bitterness, no alcohol, medium body. By the time you finish the bottle, it starts to feel a bit cloying.

Pours an average creamy off-white head that mostly diminishes. Body is medium brown, sparkled and particles are visible. Aroma contains moderate malts (cookie, hay, toasted malts, molasses), light hops (herbs, grass, orange), light yeasts (leather, soap) and sweet fruits like grape, raisin, plum, apple, pear and cherry, tawny port, brown sugar, cola and alcohol. Flavor is light acidic, then sweet and light acidic, then sweet, light acidic and light bitter, then sweet and bitter and finally bitter. Body is medium to full with creamy to syrupy texture and soft carbonation. Smooth and tasteful with subtle shifting in flavors. Mjam!
