slimchill (645), Austin, Texas, USA May 10, 2008 Draught. Pours a deep brown with a thick beige head that hangs out for the duration of a pitcher. Great aroma of smoke and malty sweetness. Absolutely and perfectly creamy. The light, sweet smoke flavors are almost absorbed by the smoothness of the palate, making this intensely drinkable. A success, though I have to comment that this is a robust porter by any definition I’ve seen, maybe a couple of points light in color. pint_size (1004), Austin, Texas, USA May 3, 2008 4-17-08 tap
Nice thick dark brown pour with a beige tan head and good lacing. Smell is smokey and malty sweet. Taste is a hint watered down. Not as big or bold as I hoped for but it is very well balanced and still quite flavorful. There is a nice malt presence but the palate is a hint thin but yet well fitting for the style. fly (1245), austin, Tejas, USA Apr 24, 2008 For not being a big fan at all of brown ales, this comes across as a pretty darn good beer. Malty and with a nice bitterness in the finish. Felt like I was searching for the smoke though -I don’t know the story behind this, and I know I’m ignorant as hell. But the name and being from a BBQ place that has me walking through wall of smokey wonder heading from car to bar and the smoke that was produced in the porter - oh well. it;s still darn good. lb4lb (1440), Austin, Texas, USA Apr 20, 2008 Rich brown to almost black pour with ruby edges. Smell is rich and nutty malt with perhaps the faintest hint of smoke in the nose. Taste is nutty maltiness, with some light smoke as well. Bittersweet and smokiness is balanced very well and it’s not overwhelming smoky. Medium bodied, and a nice take on a brown.
