Late in the 18th century Britain’s great brewing families were working hard to break into new markets. For the Baltic Sea ports they created an export version of the traditional British Porter. Styled like an IPA to preserve them for the voyage, those profound Baltic Porters served to ward off the chill winds of that northern sea. That said, we weren’t satisfied with the Baltic Porter’s traditionally subtle hint of black licorice. This ale features a blend of whole licorice root and star anise to create an uncommon addition to that traditional export Porter’s hearty character.

Black pour. Chocolate/Licorice aroma, flavor is malty, smokey, with more licorice. Interesting, not bad.

Grosses notes rôties en arôme, mélasse, anis également. En bouche ce qui me frappe c’est la présence presque littérale de cendres, dans le corps et l’arrière goût. Une certaine présence lacté encourage le reste des saveurs. Certainement unique.

On draft at CASK in London. Black with virtually no head. Aroma is coffee, anise, chocolate, blackcurrant. Smooth, slightly creamy mouthfeel, good bodied, long dry licorice and roasty finish with no bitterness. Well balanced.  Taste is chocolate, oatmeal, licorice, fig, cider vinegar.

16 ounce can. Pours black with a large, long lasting, off white head. Aroma has roast and some licorice - minor booziness. Taste is sweet with the anise jumping on the tongue. There is some dark maltiness cutting the sweetness down. The palate is a little lively on the tongue and finishes alcohol free. Pretty solid find from whole foods.

On tap at the Craft. Clear dark red brown beer, palate is light and semi dry. Mild dark malts. Has a interesting mild medicinal herb thing going on. Not bad, a little unusual.

cask @ craft beer co. Pours brown/black with a tan head. Metallic / rusty on the nose. Rich palette but slightly hoppy - a good porter!
