COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Late in the 18th century Britain’s great brewing families were working hard to break into new markets. For the Baltic Sea ports they created an export version of the traditional British Porter. Styled like an IPA to preserve them for the voyage, those profound Baltic Porters served to ward off the chill winds of that northern sea. That said, we weren’t satisfied with the Baltic Porter’s traditionally subtle hint of black licorice. This ale features a blend of whole licorice root and star anise to create an uncommon addition to that traditional export Porter’s hearty character.

On tap at the Craft. Clear dark red brown beer, palate is light and semi dry. Mild dark malts. Has a interesting mild medicinal herb thing going on. Not bad, a little unusual.

UPDATED: APR 17, 2012 Keg, combed reverentially into a glass at Craft Beer Company, Clerkenwell, 04/04/12. Glossy, tar-hued body with a swift collapsing beige top.Streaks of soft plum, orange tang, Pink Lady apple under mellow roast. Sweet and syruped with a sprinkle of burnt toast. Ash and plum aroma. Tasty, if a little sweet.

cask @ craft beer co. Pours brown/black with a tan head. Metallic / rusty on the nose. Rich palette but slightly hoppy - a good porter!

I love Baltic Porters, and had never seen one in a can until today. Pours a very dark brown with a tiny tan head and no lacing. Aroma is full of licorice, roasted coffee, brown sugar and some chocolate. Creamy texture and medium to full body with average carbonation. The finish has some spices that remind me of root beer. Interesting, and worth a try.

500mL Can. My first Baltic Porter from a can! Dry, lightly spiced warm woodsy aroma. The carbonation on this beer is way too high, it’s really screwing with the body of the porter. The overcarbonation blows the spice and licorice (strong) all over the place. A hint of molasses and lots of dark malt round out the complexity. If they could tame the carbonation, this would be better, but it still wouldn’t deal with the fact that this is mostly a spice porter and that there’s not much Baltic about it.

16oz can from Spirits The Spot. Poured a super dark brown body with an average size foamy light beige head. Aroma of wet burnt toast, sour milk, citrus. Nice lighter creamy body with average carbonation and oddly enough a fuller finish than the forebody. Flavor is simar to the aroma with lots of roasted malts, lightly burnt toast, touch of sour milk and some citrus rind. I liked drinkin this one straight from the can far better.
