COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Late in the 18th century Britain’s great brewing families were working hard to break into new markets. For the Baltic Sea ports they created an export version of the traditional British Porter. Styled like an IPA to preserve them for the voyage, those profound Baltic Porters served to ward off the chill winds of that northern sea. That said, we weren’t satisfied with the Baltic Porter’s traditionally subtle hint of black licorice. This ale features a blend of whole licorice root and star anise to create an uncommon addition to that traditional export Porter’s hearty character.

Draught at Pikkulintu. Pale brownish head. Mild slightly syropy nose. Deep dark reddish/brownish black colour. Slightly sour coffeish and malty taste. More than average carbonation. At the end some bitterness. Not too much coffee in the taste. At the very end maybe too sour.

6/2/10 notes: On tap, Beachwood BBQ. Pours dark brown-black with a small head and minimal lacing. Body is medium, creamy yet light enough so as to encourage another sip. Flavor starts with rich toasted brown bread, tobacco, coffee essence, chocolate. Mid-palate contributes an essence of nuts and dried dark fruit (might have been from the licorice/Star Anise), leading into a finish with again forefronts toasted grains and black coffee. Great balance, depth, flavor.

From the can. Dark but somewhat translucent. Decent tannish colored head. Roasty toasty taste of malt and coffee. Nice and bold.

UPDATED: JAN 19, 2013 Can. Pours clear deep brown to black with a large brown head that dissipates with some lacing. Aroma is very today, coffee, tobacco, ashtray. Flavor is the same plus anise, lightly sweet, light to medium bitter, light ashy astringence. Interesting, but a bit too anise and cigarette butty for me. BlackIPA where are you?

Black in color. Huge tan head, with little lacing when it subsides - quickly. Caramel aroma, roasty, and a big nose of alcohol. Don’t really get the anise or licorice. Sweet and a bit of a sourness, mixed in with plenty of alcohol. Creamy mouth-feel and a bit of a chalky aftertaste. Not a bad beer on tap.

16oz can. Pours black with a tan head. Pretty tasty porter with notes of chocolate, coffee and licorice. A bit too expensive for what it is but pretty good overall.
