Late in the 18th century Britain’s great brewing families were working hard to break into new markets. For the Baltic Sea ports they created an export version of the traditional British Porter. Styled like an IPA to preserve them for the voyage, those profound Baltic Porters served to ward off the chill winds of that northern sea. That said, we weren’t satisfied with the Baltic Porter’s traditionally subtle hint of black licorice. This ale features a blend of whole licorice root and star anise to create an uncommon addition to that traditional export Porter’s hearty character.

(Can) Pours dark brown to black with a creamy, light brown head. The aroma holds chocolate, dark/dried sticky fruits, dark berries and liquorice. Undertones of hops and dark bread. A whisper of bloody meat and metal. The flavour near medium sweet, light bitter and tiny acidic with notes of cocoa, chocolate, liquorice, dark/dried fruits, grassy/earthy hops and metal. The mouthfeel is soft, smooth and light tart with a light carbonation. Mild roasted and tiny hoppy finish. Medium bodied.

On tap at Pipes of Scotland. Near black with tan head. Aroma of heather, roasted malt, alcohol, whiskey and light tangy coffee notes. Taste is surprisingly light, mild roasted, whisky, alcohol light wood and some spicy notes. Decent

This p0ured a dark br0wn, nearly black b0dy with an 0verfl0wing f0amy/fizzy br0wn head. 0ddly, n0 lace. It had a smell 0f dark r0astiness, a t0uch 0f milk ch0c0late, and a str0ng whiff 0f lic0rice. It seemed a bit thin despite its p0tency. The flav0r had m0re lic0rice/aniseed than dark malt, a light sweetness.. the r0astiness being l0st by the finish. N0t bad.

Can shared with Clocks, Andy, Max, Paul and Zdk. Pours a deep black body with off white lacing. Aroma is rich coffee and dark roast. Mouthfeel is rich and creamy with notes of coffee, earthy roast, bark, light oak and light hop. The depth and richness here really surprised me.

Very earthy porter aroma with resin, chocolate powder, coffee bean oil and espresso. Pretty black appearance with a very thin brown lace. Bitter coffee punch upfront with decent chocolate, fudge, mocha, cocoa and carbonation. Overall, this is a well rounded porter. B rating.

Tap at Chucks Greenwood. Nice black pour, little head. Aroma of faint cocoa, faint roast, and wet dark malts. Flavor is wet chocolate up front, hints of burnt malts and licorice in the middle, and a nicely done sour from a Baltic Porter in the finish. Little hint of booze there in the end too. Good, not a standout.

16oz can in Seattle. Creamy, darkest brown with purple glow with nice foamy head. Very vinous and sweet, prune and fig, raisons. Big hit of licorice sweetness and anise spicing, not normally my thing but it works well in this beer. Quite nice balance and palate, drying bitter is a great finish to the sweetness (soy and licorice) up front. Nice

From a pint can shared on boxing day. Pours black with a tan head. Smoky coffee nose. Flavors of licorice and anise. Medium bodied, low carbonation and a bitter sweet roasty finish.

Appearance: medium dark brown, short, creamy medium tan head, minimal lacing and retention. Aroma: licorice, anise, chocolate, coffee, cardboard. Taste: strong roast, coffee, blast of syrupy licorice, but unsweet. Finish: slightly watery, with lingering roast and star anise. Notes: The licorice notes were prominent as advertised, but the palate of this was hardly worth the baltic porter moniker. Beer #14 of Beerdvent 2013.
