kepano (239), Meudon, France Mar 21, 2008 Very cloudy mirabelle gold, the annual brew is crowned of an opalescent froth, not unlike beaten egg whites. Light, springy and spicy, the buttery nose suggests a tripel-like combination of scents. Sweet yeasty grains are associated with apricot, peach and clementine. Hints of coriander, white pepper, vanilla, cookie and marshmallow add pleasant layers of complexity. On the palate it is definitely a textural affair. Frothy and buttery, dry but sweet, the carbonation is quite vivacious and alcohol is present. Citrus and coriander reappear along with notes of pineapple. The oral experience is less exciting, but overall this is another nice beer from Unibroue.
deyholla (506), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Oct 7, 2009 Bottle. Poured a murky dark orange with a thin light brown head. Aroma was sweet with floral and light citrus notes as well as a grainy sweetness from the malts. Flavor is sweet from the malts with a floral undertone. Very smooth on the tongue. patrickfannon (271), Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 18, 2009 Bottle. Split this brew with James and Dallas. Pours murky orange with an off-white head. Firm body with a crisp, clean finish. All around excellent Belgian strong. DeputyAndy (60), New Jersey, USA Sep 18, 2009 Pours a hazy honey color with a frothy head. Very delicate, sweet nose that’s particularly faint, might just be my glass. Sweet flavor with malts and the Unibroue carbonation. Very clean finish and very light. Nice mouthfeel. Awesome beer on lees. shared with jredmond jredmond (1015), New Jersey, USA Sep 18, 2009 Bottle split with DeputyAndy. Pours a deep hazy orange with nice carbonated head. The aroma is classic uni, delicate, spicy. The flavor is medium sweetness, malt, spice, and clean finish. Hides the alcohol very well. areyouinning (72), North Carolina, USA Sep 9, 2009 Sediment ridden light cider colored with generous white foam. Sweet and spicy aroma. Light tasting. Somewhat viscous. Notes of apple and some other fruit both in nose and flavor. ucusty (1871), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Sep 3, 2009 Thanks to Bob for sharing this beast of a beer. Hazy amber pour with sufficient floaters. Light oxidation and caramel on the nose. Flavor is spicy, but all in all this was really oxidized. durhambeer (1186), Durham, USA Sep 2, 2009 Bottle thanks to JME. Pours amber, and tastes and smells similar to a biere de garde, though some of that comes from what oxidation has done to this beer. Some cardboard on the malt, but prominent notes are caramel and rotten apples, in a good way. Mild spice as well. I’m sure this was different fresh, but it’s still pretty decent. emacgee (1859), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Sep 1, 2009 Thanks durhambeer. Pours an amber yellow with a chunks. Head is one finger offwhite. Nose is mildly oxidized, yeasty, some spices. Flavor is papery, cardboard, oxidation, some spice, a mild peach flavor. Palate is mildly carbonated. A bit past prime.
