dwyerpg (2519), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Jun 1, 2007 Some faint spices. Has some light caramel sugary notes and a bit of alcohol in the end. Another good brew from Unibroue, with a great spicy finish. KAggie97 (2406), Ugly, Hot, and Humid Spring, Texas, USA May 31, 2007 Bottle. Pours deep and cloudy amber with a nice, off-white head that leaves a spectacular lattice work of lacing around the glass. Hints of cheddar spiked with coriander and spicy bread dough permeate the air around the glass. Unusual cranberry and orange mixture, with a slight grapefruit tinge that lends itself slowly to a subtle lime finish. Full, heavy, and thick mouthfeel that leaves a lingering impression on the tongue. GREAT beer; probably the best Unibroue yet. jarspag (593), Los Angeles, California, USA May 30, 2007 Nice frothy off-white head. Flavor is quite sweet with mixed fruit - with some candi sugar underneath. Highly drinkable and quite enjoyable. mjg74 (1995), La Mesa, California, USA May 29, 2007 Bottle from Whole Foods. Pours a dark amber color with a sizable off-white head. Aroma is quite fruit. Some graininess and yeast. Flavor is slightly sweet with a nice amount of spice and some sort of fruitiness. Very full flavored. Alcohol is pretty well blended. Some bitterness in the finish. SDalkoholic (1186), Chula Vista, California, USA May 28, 2007 750 mL bottle purchased at Holiday Wine Cellar. This Belgian ale pours as a firm golden color with slight reddish tint. Creates a thick layer of foamy head that will stick around. The aroma is a undeniable Unibroue yeast and spicing that they always achieve. The flavor is a strong delivery of yeast and spice with a light spearmint gum flavor in the background. There is also a small hint of dry fruit such as raisins or mango slices if you can imagine that. Very potent stuff. bb (2905), Martinez, California, USA May 28, 2007 Bottle. Somewhat hazy copper color with a cream colored head. Yeasty, spicy aroma. Very spicy, malt, brown sugar flavor with some earth. Lingering brown sugar and spice. Medium body. High carbonation. jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA May 26, 2007 From a 750 ml. caged corked bottle with a before date of December 2009, a coded number on the shoulder of bottle, I’m guessing it’s a batch/lot number, sampled at cellar temperature in a Unibroue tulip glass.
Poured a cloudy orangey copper with a large frothy, foamy beige/off-white head that slowly settled into a thin sudsy lacing, a good deal of laced sticking.
From the first sniff you can tell this is a Unibroue ale, the very distinctive yeastiness of all their ales, big whiffs of clove, peppery spice, earthy raw nuts, nutmeg and candied sugar, apple, pears, grapes and lemon zest, and sweet grainy malts.
Good active carbonation and a crisp, dryish, airy, creamy smooth light bodied mouthfeel, a good Belgian strong ale feel.
A good pleasant and balanced taste, apples and green grapes, a nice clove spiciness, grainy, caramelized malts, nutmeg and a touch of candied sugar, a little lemon zest, peppery, zingy spice, the spiciness meshes with the alcohol providing a spicy warmth in the palate, and a dry, crisp yeasty, malty finish.
An easy sipper, quite delectable, I much prefer this to the 15th anniversary ale and the contract winter ale they do for Trader Joe’s.
jsquire (2086), St. Marys, Ohio, USA May 26, 2007 Hazy amber out of the bottle with a big foamy beige head. Very sweet nose of melted toffee, Belgian candi sugar and a bouquet of flowers. Sweet beer with lots of burnt caramel, melted toffee, orange peel, some bready malts, and enough of the alcohol to put the "strong" in Belgian strong. Nice Belgian style from North Amereica.
